I was in the Haight from 1970 to 1974. I remember the Good Earth Commune. It was on Cole St. I think they had a house right around the corner on Oak too. The White Panther Party had a house right across the street on Cole. Cass, Ron Lambert, Larry, Shirley, Janelle and her sweet little girl Hyacinth, there was Pisces Bob and Mary. Does any body remember Brian from England? How about the Masterson sisters? I remember the Peoples Ballroom that put on amazing concerts in GG Park and the Panhandle. I think Jefferson Airplane played in Marx Meadows in 1973, Hot Tuna in the Panhandle in 1974. Good times.
I remember the Straight Theatre. It was on the corner of Haight and Cole. By the time I got to the Haight, the Straight Theater was closed. Never got a chance to see it inside. Was at alot of great concerts put on by the Peoples Ballroom tho. Jerry Garcia played along with Hot Tuna in the Panhandle. Were you there? Jefferson Airplane played in Marx Meadows...an incredible crowd showed up for that one. I remember the fish and chips place too. Across the street was a shop that sold pirogies that were delicious! I remember the Omnibus Cafe and the Psalms Cafe on Haight St. I feel so glad that I was able to be in the Haight at that time. The world seemed smaller then. Easier somehow. I mean, if you needed a pair of pants or a shirt, you would find a "free box" and take what you needed. If you no longer had a need for something, just drop it off in the nearest free box. It all made sense. I think that there is hope that that way of life is not completely lost. I agree that people today are gathering energy again, and the way of life that was happening in the Haight will be back. Sure hope I'm right.
The first picture is the White House. The second picture is the Oak Street house. It was blue last time I saw it in 1974.
annms are you talkin' about the good earth houses.. the white house and the blue house by any chance.. that was where my commune was in them houses n more
shameless heifer, yeah thats it. You sound like you were with the GE Commune. I was with the White Panthers. I know that a bunch of people from the GE left to go up to Oregon when we came. Do you remember sister Chuck and her son Kern by Larry? How about Cass? Ron Lambert? We also had a house in San Rafael, Berkley and in the warehouse district.
