awesome, i would absolutely love to see some pics. tons and tons in fact and lots of detail of everything would be totaly awesome im in the process of converting a shorty bus so it would be great to see how youve done everything. ive only just got the seats out and got everything washed. been working on floor plans and i think ive got one thats workable.
of course I remember you...shorty bus eh??? I had a few of them years ago, easy to park but lots of them have the same engine/trans and differiential ratio as the larger modled which means the fuel rate is the same. what are your thoughts on adding your bus to our tribe collective? you obviously maintain ownership and run your own ship, though with the added bonus of exchanging tribe, caravaning, mechanical help and so on. we need some more buses in canada. I have a lot of bus conversion resources available. first suggestion, rip out the rubber matting and the center metal tracks, check the condition of teh sub floor should be 3.4" plywood, though they have a tendancy to rot easily, eather way add a second layer of plywood 1.4" ply this will help you with heat as well as building as the old wood wont hold a nail worth crap. invest in as many 'L' brackets the small 1 inch ones and self tapping screws...dont get the robertson heads as you will go insane stripping both the screws and your bit, get the hex heads they screw into metal easier and hold very well, 3 " deck screws will go threw the side panels of your bus very well if used with 2/4s they hold strong and will not penetrate your exterior walls., I have a bus bible with a bout 50 sample floor plans, Ill see if I can dig it up scan and sent it to you. your going to want a power inverter, dont get anyting higher then a 1000 watt, I dont even go higher then 800 wwtt, they rn about 100 bucks at canadian tire, and last a few years, the eliminater series is a decent one, I havnt had too many problems with those. they will run a tv a video game system a drill and some saws and if yoru lucky run a coffee maker youl l find strangely enough coffeemakers max out your inverters more then anything else. there are really no limits as what you can do with a bus but if you want to make it really nice expect to spend a wack load on all the small stuff, building a few bunks and putting a kitchen together out of old RV parts is easy and cheap, its all the little fasteners screws piupes regulaters inverters wiring and so on that is the kicker... the biggest tip I can give you is get the bus inspected mechanically before building the interior, I rarely get a bus that is road worthy ( even if it drives and stops) right off the bat, everything costs more on buses even mimis.... im on dial up so its been a pain to get pics on here but I should have some extremely soon, Ive taken them...just getting them online is a pain. peace I hope to hear from you soon sister.
thanks so much for the excellent reply! i had a look at the plywood floor and it seems to be in good shape, but i think a second layer of plywood sounds like a very good idea. the bus was free (yes!) from the camp i work at and its in really great shape, both structurally and, i believe, mechanically. its been regularely inspected every year till last year and really well maintained and only has 127000k on it. and i have access to all the service reciepts, and the tires are in pretty good shape. so i feel pretty good about it, but i will definitly be getting it looked at and put some money into it before taking it on the road for any length of time. my neighbor is my mechanic, hes great and charges very reasonable rates also, he power washed the bus for me which made it look like a totaly different colour, and hes going to paint the exterior white for me (im going to go crazy with the colours and swirls and murals). this sounds very interesting, can you give me more info? the hardware reccomendations are great, thats just the sort of thing i have no clue about lol. i want to keep it really simple, im not sure what im going to do about electricity. i wont have a fridge, at least not at first and no propane either. i want a little woodstove though, a marine one would be cool but theyre hard to find. some 12 v lighting would be nice. ahh lots of planning lol! ttyl, cant wait for pics!
small 1 ft florecents the come in a pre made set then boolt to your walls and plug into normal sockets, they go for about 15 bucks a pop...dont bother trying to wire an installed house lighting system....if anything and at the very least christmas lights work well, they light up the bus , dont take much power and make everything look the funk! I have a woodstove in my bus, heres the issues I cam accross. Obviously its not legal to drive down the road witha woodtove burning. but there is no lo concerning having one installed and in use when your parked. what I did was followed building code of distances to surfaces and walls, I used roxsall insulation (you can hold a torch to it and it wont burn) its expensive biut the most flame resistant material I could find, then concrete board, its easy to work with just run a set of box cutters over it enough on the same line and they snap to shape, deck screws work well even though they tell you to use masonry screws deck ones hold them to wood which is what I used for a frame, the concrete board and roxsall insulation is a perfect mix to ensure as little as possible heat transference between materials....obviously you want to heat your bus, but you dont want yer shit toburn. at first I had the stack out the window, thought highwya code will not allow you to have any obstructions sticking past yourside view mirrors, I dont know the exact distance Im sure it varys though on heavy duty veichles its a set distance... what I did was traced a circle ffrom the diameter of the stove pipe, I made sure I had one elbow in the pipe installed, a straight stack will lose lots of heat... I used a drill to make my first hole then a jigsaw witha metal blade to make the cut. there are two layers of metal from the roof of your bus to the exterior shell, seperated by a frame, watch for the rivits in the roof and place the hole center between them. dont cut any of your frame as a bus shell is designed toi withstand rollover though the whole frame has to be intact cut it and you will find your self puled off teh road in any inspection. if your bus has hydrolic brakes have them serviced if the bus has sat for 1 year or more as the calipers sieze up...pain in the ass but happens with juice brakes, if you have air your probally set when you store them tighten the screw in the brake hub ( ask your mechanic if he knows about air brakes dont have farner jim with a back yard garage mess with air brakes there not the easiest and if there set wrong you wont stopand you will be pulled off the road, BC in particualr is extremely bad for that. whats the make and model of your bus? as for tribe, when you get out there around canada you;ll start to see the same faces in every city, nomads here have an inner circle not really seen in one city but many....tribe is the same, as we grow the more ground we cover and the longer our arms reach. for one its good to have another mobile bus if you ever have any problems, 2 its great to caravan, 3 our goal if we have one at all is to spread freedom, impact positivly the communities we pass threw help others on the road feed those who are hungry share community with those we meet. each bus has its own rulles, though the over all tribe rulles apply. no violence in tribe, no hoarding everyone works everyone eats, the more we as humanity work together the greater of a people we can become together any goal can be accomplished....... I mean it may sound like Im spouting out sloagans here but maybe thats all im doing, trying to spread a concept of unity , we have no leaders just those with skills utilising our individuAL SKILS among our community. as a tribe we meet up once ita while to share stories share our crafts trade riders make plans for group caravanbs or group purchases such as land or additional buses. lots of times a captain needs his or her own time space, the tribe spreads to other buses or a new captain is chosen. we all walk our own path though walking as a tribe is easier then walking alone. Im working on a land progect where we as a tribe would have 100 or so acres of forest and field to settle when we want where buses can come and go wanderers can lay there hat, a place where we can make our bio fuel share our resourses and live outside babylons gates, not just travell around it. as tribe you get a share of any profits made from our films...though we dont have any profits yet, contracts we write entitles THC buses to a percentage after costs are paid... our film guys can let you in to the legal ins and outs....im good at organising but legal shit is not my mojo. ghandiwars on here aka breedlove is the guy to talk to. as well we have tribe everywhere, you would be surprised where you would find us, come to a town and have instant family, friends from past buses who know the vibe of the life we live on the road. as new tribe joins they give a donation to whatever bus the get on, that really helps when the gas light is on and all there is is militarya nd rednecks to sell your wares too. I have tons of people PM me to get ona bus the hardest part is getting the people to the buses or visa versa.... is your bus road worthy yet> you should try to make it out to our bus bash may long weekend in ontario, the new bus is heading out then to montreal then bc and that would be hella cool caravaning off the get go. as well give us another reasonm to celebrate welcoming another bus into the collective....the more buses we get on the road the more we attract others to this life... freedom!!! back in the 50s jack karoack ( spelt wrong) changed the face of culture with his books which gave birth to the hippy movement which gqave birth to a culturak revolution, which changed the world...only to slow momentum and fizzle down to a hot coal.......were still a glowing amber...ready to ligh it up. im tired of the face of my streets filled with thugs followinga violent culture polluting the stream with more of its kind...the more positive lit up people buses we have sharing a common goal the more we as a tribe can change the world. on the back of each of the buses, it says they say one man can not change the world. But maybe all of us can!!!! wanna change the world??? get your swirls up on your bus and see the smiles you make...thats change... geta bunch of lit up kids spreadling joy and smiles, community and love...and see some great change that sets in the hearts and kinldes a fire!!! I can go on ...but Ill stop/ peace
Ugh... So the bus is starting to come together? Whore-eh!! May 24th still the launch date? Is there any way you guys could pick my up in Welland? Also, nother dumb question... I need to be back here (Welland) by the last week of June. The idea is to go out to BC, riiiiight...? As far as I knew, Drew said he wasn't going to be on the bus the whole time either. So when is Drew heading back to Hamilton? Or how is that working? I still want on the bus... bad... I could cry I want it so fucking bad here. But I have to be back for the end of June.
pm me your number magan, I need to get you out to the bus asap, the bus is ten minutes from welland. talk in person peace drew
Hey Blinkin.. I just stumbled upon this.. I would love to speak with you.. I just signed up and it will not let me PM you.. Could you please e-mail me at beth_agnew@hotmail.com
its a van conversion by thomas on a 1986 ford e350, so not air brakes. it made the 10 minute drive home with no problems except being really noisy cause all the belts were super loose, and it needs a new battery. it should be road worthy after i tighten that shit up, get a battery and get the brakes checked out, and anything other routine stuff. i wish i could make it for the long weekend, that would be so much fun! im going up coast for the local longboard races and mayday celebration with some friends, but i am going to take the bus as a little test run im not sure what my future plans are, but they include heading on over to halifax to see my aunt and bring her her cat which im taking care of, then taking my time on the way back and seeing all there is to see. ive never been out of bc lol so im pretty stoked. i hope to be going to college at olds, alberta this winter if i can get in, and i would like to live in the bus and make little trips on my time off. my course lasts a year, and then its gypsy life for me anyway, i will certainly want to meet up when you get to bc, if i cant beforehand. as for tribe, you can count me in. you have a vision and i would love to be part of it and help make it happen. caravanning sounds really fun, and just to have like-minded people at all would be so great. much better than going it alone, just me and my dog and the road. just to make sure were on the same page and all, can you tell me what exactly the expectations are of me in terms of involvement, etc.? or add me to msn- jaegerkobierski@gmail.com or email me thanks for everything drew
ok so we took the bus for a test drive ....we broke down, ran it purly on ether with dave sitting on the engine frame spraying either half a kilometer back to the drive way..actually have this on film.... we ran out of either about three times doing this, filled the fuel filters with fuel and still no throttel, guessing fuel pump is gone...... figure out this shiot tommorrow, other than that everythings done
