I just tried to spell 'favourite' (which is the correct way to spell it) and the spell check pulled it up and wanted me to change it to 'favorite' I wish it wouldn't tell me to change my spelling to something which is blatantly not correct!
I get the same thing too,but thankfully the spellcheck allows us to override.Sometimes I go along with the American spelling, and sometimes the British.Best of both worlds I suppose.
It's not HF, it's your settings. Right click on your text field, go to Languages, and it'll take you to a page where you can take it off of US English and put it on British.
It's not really that important, but this winds me up more than US/British spelling. Badly spaced and grammatically lazy posts. My posts are not perfect, but come on, man I get the same thing to(too),(no space)but my (my?)thankfully the spell(-)check allows us (us? how many are you talking on behalf of) to override.(no space)Sometimes I go along with the American spelling,(no space)and sometimes the British.(no space)(The)Best of both worlds(,)I suppose(no full stop)
odon. It's late and I've been on here posting all day. I'm tired. This is a relatively insignificant thread in a quiet hippy forum. My posts are generally grammatically impeccable, and I usually pay great attention to getting it right. That said,I am not afraid of words and grammar, and can kick them around and do whatever I want with them.I rule language.Language doesn't rule me.Why so pedantic?
Fairlight I know your posts are usually 'impeccable'. It was nothing personal. I didn't say YOUR posts wind me up. I, also, wasn't being 100% serious.
If you are using Firefox ,you need to have the British dictionary add-on. https://addons.mozilla.org/En-us/firefox/addon/british-english-dictionary/ BTW did you not know in north America they have slightly different spellings to that of the UK? There is such a thing as Australian spelling but these are preferences than absolutes. Wikipedia explains it quite well.
exactly. i got the american dictionary plug in for firefox years ago, that's how i do so well here even though Slovenian is my first language.
Yes I knew, this thread was just a bit of a hassle at Americans and their crazy spelling. When I was an ESL teacher I taught from an American English textbook and while I wasn't a fan of American spelling and pronunciation I did become very familiar with it. :sunny:
Oh my gosh someone down-rated this thread! Someone needs to take a chill pill methinks. I was just kidding about the 'incorrect spelling'. I know different countries speak and write English in different ways. Calm dooooooooooooooooooooooooown y'all.
