the problem with that picture is that franchising and the corporatizing of retailing has come to hog the employment landscape in america.

the kind of 'second jobs' people used to move up to from their first jobs, as a percentage, have all but dissapeared. and its a much longer leap from there, to sustainable income type jobs, and even those have been largely subcontracted out.

at least half of any population are NOT born to be extroverted. nearly all develop mental problems when forced by circumstance to try to pretend to be more extroverted then they were born to be. and sorry, but if you don't have the means to get the education it takes to get into engineering, the sciences or management, flipping burgers or being a robodrone at off the wall mart, seems to be pretty much what there is.

Hmm. It always puzzles me when some people talk about employment and shit.
How the fuck can McRats etc be considered an example to people coming into work.
It produces shit, it lies like fuck, it treats staff like shit, its ethics vs competitors are shit, it is a total lobbying wanker of a company. Having said that, its better than Burger King (.. I think). Because BK had staff log off from work when it was quiet, wait in the building, then log on to serve a customer, then "leave work" again. So they were paid about £1 per hour.

On the same topic, I had an email today. We'd taken a call where the government was allowing you to take on staff for £2.85 GBP per hour (under half the normal minimum wage) by saying they are "apprentices". I mean what the fuck is this shit?

I'd be fucking ashamed to take anyone on at that rate. Doubtless there are some scum that will do that.. but WTF.

I'm sure there's plenty of companies busy sacking their staff today, then recruiting these "apprentices".

No wonder so many people think "fuck it" and start importing coke for a living..

They try that shit with people where I work.. I straight up told them, I might take a half hour break here and there, but there's no way I'll be clocking in and out all day to save you money.. If I"m clocking out I'm going the fuck home, simple as that. I'm not gonna be here and not be paid.

That is illegal in the state where I live and most likely illegal in most of the U.S., regardless of what the "boss" might say.
Learn and know the labor laws in your state.
If I show up for scheduled work and they don't need me, I still get paid a minimum of 4 hours wages, even if I get sent home.

Just any company doing that is sleazy, but unpaid or low paid apprenticeships have been the norm for ages in highly skilled or artistic trades. The apprentice gets the benefit of "on the job" training and a chance to hone their skills while not earning as much a a more skilled person.

But for factory jobs or stuff like that, an apprenticeship is lame.

are they not already members of some union? if not, striking is plain stupid, there is no promise of job retention. LOL
Go ahead and strike, they will just fire you and hire other people.

Don't know if the laws are the same in the states where they are striking, but going on strike without union backing is pretty much quitting your job.

"want to be able to form unions". Why would they not be able? I believe the service workers in Vegas have a strong union, so they should try to join an existing union.

No one around here gives two shits. Can't get more than 30 hours working at any restaurant or most retail stores. I got sick of being looked down upon by all these "high and mighties" anyway, so hopefully a position in a bank or similar setting will come through for me soon.

There are probably no workers more mistreated than the fast food industry. From corporate to customers they are not given the respect that they should be.

They have deplorable hours, wages and working conditions and deal with the public who look at them with disdain.

Food industry workers deserve far more credit than they get.

THANK YOU!!!! Seriously, I'm so glad SOMEONE came in and said this. Man, I worked it for 6 and a half years and I would definitely still be there if our shit corporate hadn't decided to cut assistant managers across the board. It's not glamorous, but like we used to say, it takes a special kind of person to do the job and stick around. Yes, I did work with many people FAR too stupid for the job. (*gasp* YES, those types of people DO exist! Where they work otherwise is beyond me but I'm not going to start generalizing and insulting other industries because I assume I know what goes on) But I worked with some highly intelligent, very hard working people as well that deserved much more respect than they were handed day to day.

People treat you like you're the scum of the earth (as if that isn't evident throughout this thread), corporate treats you like shit, and you never ever get a high-five or a "way to go" when you've gone above and beyond. People try to steal money from you, they're always complaining for free stuff, and corporate just allows it to happen and then blames it on you. Never do you get positive reenforcement, you hear about every complaint, but never get a breath regarding compliments (and I know we had them because customers would come in and ask if we got their positive review. Nope, not once.). But the general public seems to think we deserved that. I put up with 6.5 years of disrespect and verbal abuse. The people I worked with, the boss I worked for in the end, my need to keep my bills paid and food in my belly, and the few customers who rooted for us to our faces kept me going.

No, I don't speak for all fast food employees or stores, but I damn sure speak for the awesome group of people I left behind. People can generalize all they want, but there are people out there who are busting their humps and getting swept under the blanket opinion the general public seems to hold.

Real food industry people. Not fast food. They invest money in machine that remove the fries from the oil so the dreggs they hire don't burn themselves. Everything in fast food is dumbed down. Fuck them getting raises. Watched some dumb inbred chick whine about how she has a kid and can't make a life out of what McDs pays her. Get a better fucking job then. Jesus. Do we see newspaper delivery boys whining about how their paper route can't pay for their day to day? No because it's not a high paying job. Because it's simple work. Just like fast food. Cookie cutter shit that the dumbest fuck on earth should understand.

In my field apprenticeships are common. I have a helper right now who might do a job that gets me paid $200, $300, $400 and he makes $10/hour. But the trade off is I teach him a skillset, tell him what to do and come get me if he runs into a problem, etc. In the meantime he builds up his knowledge base and tool base, then eventually goes out on his own. I think it's a good system for any skilled field. The apprentice needs to pay their dues and learn, and the person who is teaching and already paid their dues gets some payback. And the business wins too. More production, higher bottom line.

"get a better job". If if they ALL got a better job, that Leaves who to do the jobs? Somebody's going to have to do those jobs(as long as people are going to eat that crap) and they need to fucken be paid enough to live on. Reminds me of the farm workers in the San Joaquin valley where I grew up. The farms are like feudal estates. The workers get some paltry paychecks and you(anybody) would NOT BELIEVE how the farmers live!! One for whom I did work, picked 20,000 acres of cotton last year!! Not to mention his thousands of acre of pistachios. People that work should be paid a living wage.(or should I say his mexicans picked the cotton).

no sympathy from me for anyone who works fast food type job with kids, struggles with paying bills and complains about making a "low" wage. should have made better decisions earlier in life.

kids should be taken away and the worker should be told to fuck off

It is more like a sign of American universities ripping off students by placing them in debt in a society where the majority of graduates never find a use for their degrees. Menial jobs are all they can usually find after graduation, and why should they be paid less just because the job is crappy?

I read recently, cannot remember where, that a fast food company in another country actually pays its employees around fifteen dollars an hour.

    I THINK he's trolling.

(in any case, working in anything is working and better than sitting on your ass. that said- I'm glad I don't have to work. lol.--- although I digress. Taking care of a kid is work but yea... no boss but me. and when he's in school i'm sure I will find a way to work for myself like I did for years before he was born.)
