Thank you, MAMA I really have high hopes for my family and our future. I hope to set an example as well, as I'll be the first in my family to pursue college.
as a foodservice worker, $15 an hour is completely out of the question.. what are these people, retarded? they'll all get cut to 4 hours a week and the management will just dig into the stack of hundreds of applications for replacements. I make 9.50 (when i'm not delivering) but that's because I out-perform everyone. consistently. I'm not a manager (well, sometimes I am, but I don't want to be) and I take initiative where it is desirable. If you do this and your bosses don't recognize this, then go work for someone who does. It IS that easy. Plus, I get as many hours as I want, because there's always some slacker who's willing to go home if I show up trying to work.
X-ray Medical Tech. I hated the place I worked though, so I switched over to pharmacy, and eventually into nuclear medicine.
Things are pretty far out of whack. Here in Boston, a single mother (or father) with one child must make about $26 per hour just to make ends meet, according to researchers at MIT. http://livingwage.mit.edu/places/2502507000
I actually do home daycare now . Once both my kids are old enough for school, I'll get back into my career.
I didn't know you had kids either, haha. But this stuff about fast food workers striking.. I thought you had to have a non expendable skill to strike? What the hell is this world coming to. On another note, most of my girlfriends have been servers in sit down restaurants. Everything from a grill type place to fine dining. The amount of money they made doing that was insane for what their job actually entailed and the hours they worked. $30-40k easy working 20-30 hours per week and taking random trips all the time.
I made 30K "flipping burgers" but to be honest, I was management, so my job entailed a bit more than that. I don't think the regular team members and non-management should make that much, but I do think it's bullshit that no one can get more than 29 hours these days. And they say "Oh get two jobs." That's hilarious because we had upper management who would tell us that we were not to work around someone else's schedule. Most places won't work with someone else's schedule because they want you to be available whenever they want. Fuuuuuuck fast food, I am going to do my damnedest to get a job in a different industry.
I have worked fast food, in several areas. Wendy's, Dominoes Pizza, Subway, Burger King, to name a few. Trust me- if those kids want more money then I suggest they either learn how to work and/or find another place. I might eat at Subway, but the others, no way. Lazy kids, have no idea how to follow instructions, no idea how to do anything more than slap a patty on a bun and call it good. And when they literally have no idea how to tell the difference between mustard and mayonnaise.... It's a minimum wage job for a reason- because they're kids and they're learning how to work. You'll see adults there because they need the work. Don't complain, it's not cheap labor- it's opportunity. $7.25/hr (in Utah) for a 30 hour week is $435 every 2 weeks gross. After tax, for me, I'll net about $308. IF I pull 30 hours a week. When I was working fast food, if I wanted hours, the stupid lazy kids would let me take their shift. It was not uncommon for me to pull overtime until the super caught on. Best time I had was a 55 hour week, two in a row. Super was mad, but at least I worked. the kids wouldn't. Of course I wasn't pulling $7.25/hr. either. More like $4.25/hr. And back then it wasn't half bad. Boss made up a special rule- over time is not recorded on the clock, but you'll be paid cash, tax free. So instead of the $4.25/hour @ time and 1/2, it was $4.25 cash. So that was about $275/2 weeks plus $130 cash. Back then, 20 years ago, that $400 could go a long ways. Adjusting the pay scale for now, $7.25/hr., that's $470 net, and $215 cash. $685 net. Honestly, unless you're in NYC where a coffee costs an arm and a leg, it's not much. Where I am, different story. That would cover my monthly mortgage & utilities in the first two weeks. Not bad. Get a GF, work hard, we'd do pretty good. I'll do that kind of work again, no problem there. But it'll be just like the last time- kids just getting in the way of getting a job done.
