The ever evolving hippies and their predecessors 1930 to 2021 By Thomas Barnable . A timeline
Hope you like it please read full post
1930 to 1961 : predecessors all though during this time period male identifying 1950s rock stars where clean cut with short hair and no facial hair , deep in the underground , folk music listening , sexually liberated , peace loving , flower power , pot smoking , bohemian people were starting to exist including Homade bell bottomed flowing haired men , however they were not yet associated with rock n roll , and favoured folk music and and even folk tinged non bigoted western country music . Like woody Guthrie , Pete Seeger and Johnny cash
1962 : the beginning of the sunshine of your love
It was getting near dawn , and nighttime signs , street lights and radio tower lights “ were beginning close their tired eyes” with the emerging Bob Dylan and Peter , Paul and Mary were striking a chord with people all around , society was awakening and consciousness was expanding the summer of love was just around the corner , music was ever changing and evolving and a new dawn was beginning the term hippie was not yet a thing though , and most rockers still had short hair . British Invasion was emerging . And people were starting to experiment with psychedelics
1963 : just like the previous year but slightly more evident. Male rockers began growing just past chin length hair and hints of earthyness in rock were popping up
1964 : the prototypical hippie is now developed meaning it’s a definite thing but without a name . if you look far enough into the into the underground this year you would find open minded flowing haired hippie Beatles fans yet to establish a name for them selves at this time
    1965 : hippies establish themselves
The first real year of the hippie era they now officially have a name : the hippie ! Countless hippie bands formed this year .
1966 : hippie made its way to Canada and became international and gained a following
1967 : hippie was at its finest may be the quintessential hippie year , it may be at its peak but it’s still quite a counterculture , pop festivals , sunshine and rainbows hippie was starting to go mainstream , marginally so but nevertheless it was . The San Francisco flower power scene was in its summer of love . War protests were common and the mainstream hated the hippies and sunshine of your love and countless hippie anthems were released .
1968 : the second summer of love True hippies were bigger then ever , if you missed out in ‘67 this is your second chance to relive and reminisce about last years memories ! And keep living the dream . Party is anything but over . By now with the advent of free love invading gay culture , so did hippie take over lgbtq+ culture
This particular year more Gay men embraced hippie culture than ever before . The first hippie subgroup I affectionately call the glam hippie was prototyped . A look exemplified by Michael Bruce and Dennis dunnaway from Alice Cooper , all of Uriah heep and Ian Gillan from Deep purple
A clean shaven , pretty boy with short but bushy chops , flowing crimpy wavy hair parted in the middle , along with women’s blouses , mystical makeup and shiney sequin bell bottoms and floppy hats , hippie drag queens were now even a thing a lot of the glam hippie aesthetic can be traced back to Gay and Bi men along with non binary people assigned male at birth people embracing flower power! and the hippie twink was born !
1969 : hippie was now mainstream in the best possible way a very popular counter culture .
The Vietnam war was raging and we hated it !
Hippie was now expanded to most popular music genres including classical , pop , folk , blues psych rock , hard rock and even southern rock and country ! The allman brothers band pioneered a southern fried flower power sound , later emulated by lynyrd skynyrd , however although skynyrd tried to be hippie in their aesthetic their politics said otherwise with flirts with confederate values , the rebel flag and relentlessly trying to cover up the fact they had a non binary and bisexual guitarist : Allen Collins .
Hippie was still very much a counter culture , but was a well liked one at that . The immortal hippie festival wood stock happened this year ! As the 60s were coming to a close a stabbing at a Rolling Stones concert wounded the hippies and caused some to focus on darker more political themes in their music and less childlike wonder. With increased maturity , and a tiny bit of innocence was lost ! But we kept going ! That being said many hippies still embraced child like wonder ! Also by now lots of straight men embraced the glam hippie and some would nowadays cry queer baiting .
1970 : the year hippie sold out hippie was now so mainstream every one and their grandmother was one ! Even the newly formed metal bands black sabbath , bedemon and pentagram embraced hippie . Conservative People who previously hated hippies now jumped on our bandwagon ! Just to fit in and be cool ! It was now obnoxiously popular and to be a poser
Everywhere you looked you saw hippie posers the last hippie subgroup was formed the biker hippie previously hippies and bikers were enemies but the song born to be wild released years prior gained a resurgence and inspired the biker hippie , they finally made peace with each other . Hippie was so mainstream there were communes practically in every neighbourhood
1971 : all types of hippies were still popular but virtually all the innocence was lost , the grown up flower child or hippie parent was now becoming a thing but hippies gained a cynicism and pessimism this year cocaine burnt out , killed and ruined the lives of the hippies everywhere ! It was a sad year for us many a hippie cried this year .
1972 : the last mainstream hippie year . the glam hippie or twink hippie was now more popular then ever , hippie became less and less associated with folk music and was now mostly a rock n roll subculture but the bearded , freak flag scruffy hippie men were just now starting to become passé . raunchy rock bands dressed like twink hippies or glam hippies were all the rage like led zeppelin for example they peaked this year ! With the release of stairway to heaven as a single ! Even though it was released the previous year it was one of the biggest songs of late 1972 .
1973 : beginning of the end
Although rock bands still embraced a twink hippie or glam hippie look in fact most still did , the prototype/ blueprint for more macho rockers was emerging , but by no means mainstream
The bearded scruffy hippie was so out of style it was not even funny . Hippies once again became hated on .
    1974 : almost over
Even glam hippies were getting fewer . And the original movement of bearded scruffy hippies officially flatlined . Glam hippie was slowly starting to get replaced with simple pub rock , less earthy glam rock and the blueprint for the new wave of British heavy metal and punk rock . Hippies were now starting to become horribly grown up boring yuppies , but a small number of hippies refused to let it die
1975 : pronounced dead : the scruffy bearded hippies were gone and forgotten and the original glam hippies / twink hippies died tragically this year and no one really cared the sun has officially set and the moon now shines on in their memory
The last hippie anthem Rhiannon penned by Stevie nicks was released this year
1976 : the funeral and burial / cremation for glam hippies . It was held with the original Alice Cooper band as the pall bearers
The few people who still liked this subculture celebrated . Stevie nicks was a guest at the funeral .
Hippie fashion was still being sold , for the emerging early disco scene and for fleetwood Mac fans
1977 : gone but not forgotten now disco was bigger then ever ! And the disco people honored and worshipped / prayed too their distant glam hippie ancestors even the yuppies still reminisced about old times their was still a market for hippie clothes with the release of rumours and countless disco hits
1978 : the last year of glam hippie fashion had a niche market even pop rock / glam metal band van halen still wore bell bottoms and embraced disco fashion
But it was getting rarer with every passing month . And unless you liked disco which was still huge you wouldn’t buy it
1979 : all traces of hippie are dead , the funeral for the glam hippie aesthetic was held but the funeral for glam hippies them selves was held years before ! Hippie glam fashion was now such a niche market it wasn’t even likely sold in most stores anymore it had to be a special order item like in the 80s . Even disco was calming down . With disco. Demolition night . A new style of heavy metal is being prototyped along with new wave and ska
The new metal sound was angry , masculine , had extremely overt satanic themes , not just a tounge in cheek AC/DC bit of fun or a Black sabbath warning about the dangers of hell with an ironic subtle Christian message , but this time it’s angry and sounded sincere with metallic thunderous drumming , searing buzzy tinny guitars and thrashy rhythms and pounding metallic bass . They wore denim patchy vests and metallic studs .
1980 : the new metal sound has arrived on the mainstream any remaining glam hippies ( they still exist even today ) were laughed at and ridiculed by yuppies
This is an interesting transitional year while metal was still associated with being a free spirit , an LGBT ally , a left winger , an advocate for race equality a tree hugger or youthful playfulness or even androgyny , It still had a much darker edge that was prototyped the previous year the head bangers of this year were dressed from head to toe in denim and leather and sang ultra dark lyrics and shredded the guitar instead of soulfully playing it . but these metal heads still were just shy gentle kids who secretly loved everyone who even empathized with the prehistoric hippies as they were a counter culture and they could relate . They were not ready and secretly probably didn’t want to shake off these stereotypes . And in private might have even frolicked in the rain between headbanging !
Overkill by Motörhead and Hell’s bells the opening track off AC/DC Back in black album is an anthem for the metal head who’s playful childlike hippie brain , had yet to catch up with their Denim and leather, bullet belt studded body
AC/DC a rock n roll band who overall are no heavier then free or the who were confused , saddened and frightened by Bon Scott’s death , and their child like innocent and pleasantly naive minds who’s eyes have not yet died after all they are grown up school boys ! It made them wondered why . history repeats itself because the hippies years before felt the same way !
Their increasingly thuggish image was only playful prior to this .
AC/DC found them selves asking god why , searching for answers and bargaining with him to get Bon back . They became increasingly angry and frustrated at god . And Wanted to give this new cutting edge metal sound a try . And although the riff was written years before Hells Bells was officially born .
And it’s heavy and dark enough to give black sabbath a run for their money ! Truly powerful and epic one of their finest it’s literally a thunder storm in a song! the tolling funeral bell represents Bon .
The quirky , playful and free spirit and loud jangly sound while still retaining dark and angry qualities of the whole back in black album is a reminder that
Early headbangers were hippies at heart ! And the sexual and borderline misogynistic themes are just playing with irony and joking to prove a point , just like led zeppelin did years before . I can’t imagine any other band turning angry sorrow into a rowdy party classic .
1981 : this year was just a mirror of 1980 the previous year
1982 : a new and awful anti hippie metal ideology was emerging in the underground metal scene this new metal sub genre sounded and looked just like the early head bangers but neo Nazisn , racism , fascism , bravado fool hardy toxic masculinity and homophobia found a home here ! And this time not only did the metal bands try to sound sincere about their satanism they actually meant it
1983 : the new bigot metal went mainstream , not only now was hippie fashion and music dead but hippie thoughts and perspectives were too
as well The least hippie year in music history
1986 : the year hippie tried to make a comeback but bombed . with the tragic and untimely death of cliff Burton from Metallica who was an 80 s metal head but wanted to keep the hippie minded metal heads alive and bring a touch of flower power to mid 80s extreme metal as an experiment to see if they mixed . Genius if you ask me ! People were inspired to take action and a few doom metal bands tried out the hippie aesthetic , and despite a cult following sadly they never saw the light of day
Sometime in the early 90s : bands like blind melon and the black crows and infinite others resurrected all hippie subgroups ! It was the late 60s all over again ! It lasted until about 1996
1997 to 2000 : now a new bohemian subculture was developing : the hipster or artsy fartsy . as much as I like them and think they are cool they often lack the free spirit and child like curiosity of the original hippies and are even sometimes pretentious !
Nowadays : the world is a wonderfully mixed and diverse place with all types in my opinion we are about to undergo another great shift in consciousness and new awakening . Who knows We could be . We could be on the verge of a third wave of hippies ! Never stop dreaming ! And I doubt hippie will ever die out completly and be gone forever , not as long as myself , And my friends are still alive ! it ever dies completly , it will go with us ! Hope you enjoyed it ! Remember , the views expressed here are just my opinion .
