who is the most talented guitarist?
the sad anwser is we really don;t know....
hendrix was definatley a pioneer and i am a huge fan of him, however he was by no means the most talented
After Eddie Van Halen came by in the 80's it spawned a new generation of speed and tap guitarists who could put Halen and Hendrix to shame,
HOWEVER thanks to fucking main stream pop culture (*cough MTV *cough)
a talented guitarist is no longer valued as much a black guy you can say bitch and whoe 40 times so the coverage of the guitarist's who were inspired by hendrix and Halen Etc. we really don;t know about....however if you have a p2p share program (IE winMX or Kazza) there are vidoes and concerts of the underground search for very talented guitarists,
the people who are more skilled that previous guitarists like hendrix number in the thousands but no one pays attention to them because (like i said before) they can't make as much $ are brittney or 50cent.
Talent is no longer required in music thanks to MTV, large reccord lables, and suburban girls ages 10-14 who buy there albums.

eh... screw van halen... I've seen his concerts... he doesn't have the soul that hendrix had... if there was one man who could ever amount to nearly the same status as hendrix, it's this one...

Yeah, I've heard it before... but, whenever I hear van halen, I think of that drew carey show episode where mimi plays panama over and over...

But, don't get me wrong, Van Halen is great... Sammy Hagar too...

And I don't necessarily have a shrine of him... but I have a shrine dedicated to a few guitar greats... spanning from the top shelf is Blind Willie McTell, Robert Lockwood Jr., Robert Johnson, Mississippi Fred McDowell, John Hurt, Howlin Wolf, Albert Collins, Albert King etc... and it spans down to Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Jimmie Vaughan, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Randolph... I have a self-painting of eric clapton... :D yeah... I'm a psycho... *doo dee doo doo*

But my four ultimate favorites have to be Stevie Ray Vaughan, Neil Young, Buddy Guy, Bob Dylan

true...halen does not have the soul hendrix or SRV does...but technicul profecency...EVH and Randy Rhodes can out play both of them...IMO. In all honesty I think Jimmy Page is better than Jimi. But I'm technical profeciency here.

dont get me wrong, these guys are good. Stevie was better than any I had ever seen before BUT...

He and Jimi owe more than a little to a guy named Albert King, whose guitar style and sound both Jimi and Stevie went to great lengths to emulate. Not that Albert is the best ever, but he is good enough to be copied by the greats.

I still think Les Paul is a better player than anyone here is giving credit for. All but a couple listed here use Les Pauls riffs and tricks. And only 10 to 50 years after he did!

Yeah, I know Albert King... he was the father of the same style Jimi and Stevie did. BB King, Robert Lockwood, Robert Johnson, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf... and Mississippi John Hurt was the father of acoustic Fingerstyle... A lot of people have no idea who JJ Cale is but, he's one of Eric Clapton's idles and you can hear it in Clapton's playing because Clapton took Cale and Robert Johnson and mixed them together... Stevie Ray Vaughan knew he wasn't better than any of the old blues greats. They had BB King opening for stevie in Canada and he said he wasn't ever going to allow it ever again because if BB King was going to be playing with him, he was going to be the one to open for him and his band in the future... that's another thing I like about him. He had a lot of respect for his idols... but clapton, on the other hand, can get a little caught up in himself... haha, I realize he was just having fun, but at the Crossroads festival, he seemed like he kept wanting to outdo BB King... :p and then BB was like "shit"... :p I'll really be sad the day these guys die... because they're all getting old and there's only a few young ones left... I cried the day Ray Charles died... :p

But I've always been one to disqualify page... though he is a good guitarist... I don't like the fact that he stole the yardbirds music... and you realize that Deep Puple's Smoke On The Water and Ted Nugent's Cat Scratch Fever are pretty much the same damn song? :p Comparing Steve Vai and Joe Santriani to people like hendrix and vaughan... yeah, very good technical players, but they went to college... and as far as texas blues goes, I think Jimmie Vaughan is more of a Texas Blues and tex-mex player than Stevie was... Stevie is a lot more roadhouse. Oh, and who can forget... Chuck Berry.... I think Billy Gibbons is really good too....

Really...how did he steal their music. I don't recall any Led songs sounding like the YB's. But I was reading an article by him concerning bluez and stuff...he was saying that everyone back then took little riffs here and there from each other...Yea Jimmie is awesome. Steve Vai and Joe Satch did go to college but you can't hide the fact that their one of the greatest guitar players. Look at Randy Rhodes...started playing when he was 4 and was just a natural gifted player. Me and my boy will get into these debates about bluez guitarest and my sherd fav's....he'll say they have no soul or heart in theri playing...which at times is true cuz its hard to put alot of soul into something thats flying at 250bpm...

I still can't believe that more people haven't bigged up Trey Anastasio. I have listened to almost every guitarist posted here and none, in my opinion, even come close. Okay, jimi comes close :).

I know... I really ought to give them credit for what they do... and they do it well, and it's an art.... haha, it's just never been my thing, well, out of all the shredders, Steve Vai has always been my favorite... I don't know, there's always been something about him that I really liked a lot. :)

I am not sure about the idea of superlatives. I agree with much of what is said here. But nobody has mentioned George Benson. In 1976 when I was right into Hendrix, Geroge Benson's Breezin album was released.I think it was the first album to be no1 in the pop album, R&B and the Jazz charts all at the same time.
