have just finished watching Heaven's Gate. I remember at the time of its release, it a commercial and critical flop. I was not that impressed with The Deer Hunter and being a young man at the time I was quite pliant, I decided not to seek it out. As a drama student I decided to watch it to find out how not to make a movie, but I found it to be a generally entertaining movie. What I saw was the edited version cut down to 208 minutes. The only reservations I had about it were some of the earlier scenes were a tad too long and the last two scenes unnecessary. A subtitle explaining what happened to the two last characters would have sufficed. I am welll aware that Michael Cimino was a perfectionist and extravagant and went way over budget. The fact some characters were talking less that fluent English added authenticity.
