As well as being an anticoagulant, which prevents platelets from forming chains, it also thins the blood.
Following surgery rejection tissues form, so with a mitral procedure they are immediately upstream from the aortic valve. Since a blockage of the aortic valve, added to the normal stroke and TIA risks can be catastrophic, it is vital that you take these drugs EXACTLY as prescribed. It is quite likely that your medication is a cocktail with substances such as aspirin which has been designed to meet your specific needs.

I mentioned all this because these drugs make you feel groggy and I feared that you may try weening yourself off them. Your surgeon may not have explained their function fully, but they are VITAL. Mistakenly assuming that they are painkillers and reducing the dose before advised could prove fatal.
Hopefully your consultant will feel confident following tests or an MRI follow up to reduce your dosage, possibly to as little as 80mg of aspirin a day, but whatever you do, don't take advice from anyone else, INCLUDING YOUR GP, without complete consultation with your cardio thoracic consultant.

I am sorry to sound a bit morbid, but I have seen mistakes in the past, particularly when people don't realise that complete idiots are free to post on the internet and they do not have the first clue about the difference between post operative care and addiction to antidepressants.

No doubt you did not know that I qualified in cardiology (not to the level of surgeon) about 50 years ago. Then I decided to take up a career in totally different types of theatres. :)
However when work dried up in the 90s, I went back for 12 years, working at the start of TAVI.

You may find this early video of the procedure interesting. As I mentioned in my last post, a lot of improvements have been made to the basic procedure, so it is no longer simply a means of adding a few years to a frail patients life.

Warfarin is not what I take as an anticoagulant. Mine is Xarelto., which the doctor said has less chance of brain bleeding, but more of gastrointestinal bleeding... More fixable, I guess.
The older I get, the more inclined I become to rattle when I move, with all the pills!
The real headache is the insulin shots.
I'm glad to hear your catheters are both free and painless, though.

    I hear you, brother.
As far as those fingerpricks go though, it's three or four times a day and I only have so many fingers!
    Sometimes they get sore!
    I shouldn't complain.
    Beats the alternative, doesn't it.

Because it thins the blood, as well as preventing platelet coagulation, Warfarin is favoured immediately following cardiothoracic surgery. In most cases the long term preventative is 80mg of aspirin per day.
All anticoagulants are primarily formulated to suit specific medical conditions. I am not 100% certain, but I seem to remember that Xarelto is used to prevent coagulation during hyperglycaemia.

    So glad!
I know everyone missed you, brother.
    Isn't that COVID19 test a drag?
Feels like they're trying to get a brain sample.
It'll be good to be in your own bed again.
