    .........

I have to go into hospital first thing tomorrow morning (14/12/2020) by hospital taxi, which will transport me to Liverpool Heart and Chest hospital for that operation.
My present Mitral Valve is leaking and failing badly so needs replacing ASAP.

I am told I have a 9% chance of popping my clogs and a 2% chance of having a stroke, and my surgeon said to me:

'Look at it this way Sir.
You have an 89% chance of coming through the operation fixed and well!'
Of course I will take those odds!:)

With any luck I hope to be home for Christmas and the New Year, so back posting in this HIP forum.
I will have my iPad and iPhone with me in hospital, so I do hope to post from there if I get the chances.

If I don’t make it, I can say that it has been very nice conversing with almost :tonguewink: all of you!

So please send me luck as you wave me goodbye!

I just hope there are some sexy nurses on the ward so I can try and be cheeky with them!

    ...

I understand sexy Candy Gal  is one of the nurses.
    WOW!
    Job done!
    Nice one!

Boozer you are a brave man. I believe in the op. You may have more chance of catching the big C in the hospital than not pulling through.

All will be well. These days a procedure like that is a walk in the park. Well, sort of. But enjoy the anesthesia!

    ...

Thank you all who have posted very nice thoughts and wishes up to now.
I already feel better, but I cannot deny that I am somewhat worried about this.
Am going in the shower now, and then evening meal and some telly.
In bed by 11.00PM (instead of 3.00am) tonight as I have to be up by 6.00am.

Will pop in here later though.

    Thank you all again. :)

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
My youngest brother just had that done, with a bovine valve.
I haven't let up with the cow jokes yet.

Actually 6 years ago I had my Aortic valve replace the same way.
This is more dangerous because I am that much older now.
    .....
How is an aortic valve replacement carried out?
An aortic valve replacement is carried out under general anaesthetic.

This means you'll be asleep during the operation and won't feel any pain while it's carried out.

    During the procedure:

    • a large cut (incision) about 25cm long is made in your chest to access your heart – although sometimes a smaller cut may be made
    • your heart is stopped and a heart-lung (bypass) machine is used to take over the job of your heart during the operation
    • the damaged or faulty valve is removed and replaced with the new one
    • your heart is restarted and the opening in your chest is closed
The operation usually takes a few hours.
You'll have a discussion with your doctor or surgeon before the procedure to decide whether a synthetic or animal tissue replacement valve is most suitable for you.

Find out what happens during an aortic valve replacement
