It wasn’t exactly Charmin or Cottonelle but it did work. Besides it also served as great kindling for starting the nightly campfire

Mine was at doe lake in ontario. Did you have those cream coloured canvas tents on the platforms though? Thats what we had. I remember them well. Every time it rained a bunch of earwigs would crawl inside and just hang upside down from the ceiling of the tent. If anyone touched the sides of the tent it would shake the earwigs off into our sleeping bags and we'd all start running around screaming! XD

No they were canvas green, and no earwigs but there was the occasional spider

After 3 great summers my parents came up with this fucking brilliant idea to send me to a summer camp in Marshfield, Massachusetts which was more like a luxury resort.

No more war canoe races, no one mile swim, no more canoe trips down the Saco river in Maine, no more camping trips along the Appalachian trail, but we did get to play capture the flag with the rival camp in the next town over ~ sigh

Lake Winnepesaukee was one of my favorite places to spend the summer growing up. I loved it up there. I'd set out in a canoe first thing in the morning and not come back till the sun went down. I had an uncle who owned some land up there so we always had a place to stay.

A friend of mine's father was the police chief of Meredith. Their house was right on the water. I grew up in Boston so it always blew me away that all the 911 calls for Meredith went straight to their house. Her mother was the de facto 911 operator and just called her husband on the radio when somebody called in.

As for summer camps I went to Camp Wing in Duxbury, MA and Camp Spofford in Spofford, NH.

When we go to our property in Marion, NC there's no water in my brother-in-law's cabin. There's an open pipe at the spring if there's been enough rain. There's an out house there. I'm really surprised that someone ran electricity to it. They say it's an old Miner's Hooch.

On our property, on the creek, it's all primitive camping. The longest stretch I spent there was two weeks. I washed clothes in the creek and everything.

Yes. Yes, I have. I come from a very, very poor family on my mother's side.

I told my mom once that I would never ever go back to visit my extended family again, unless I stay at a motel/hotel. She raised me to have different standards, as in having indoor plumbing.

I always wanted to go camping, though. But, that's different. Being poor and not having indoor plumbing because of it is different than camping.

Both of my step-brothers grew up in Marshfield. I'm from Mattapan. Somehow I came out on the wrong end of that deal.

What was the name of your camp? I went to Camp Wing next door in Duxbury. Camp Wing was fun but definitely not a luxury resort. It was a camp for inner-city kids so there were, um....troubled kids there. I was a camper for three summers then became a camp counselor.

coldest place I lived was in the loft of a barn for the winter. I had electricity, but no plumbing and no water. that was 50+ yards away. It was cheap rent and just a big room... I was so fucked up on drugs and alcohol at the time I couldn't afford shit and was about to give in. waking up in the middle of the night still fucked up and you can't drink your own water cause its frozen and you start work at 2am.

Its how I got my dog, took a risk with weather and 2 months later we got outta there.

being homeless is a different kind of experience.

My grandmother didn't have any indoor plumbing when she was a kid. She was born in 1921 and lived just outside Boston. I didn't believe her at first but she pulled out some old B&W photos from when she was a kid playing in her back yard. There they were - an outhouse and a hand pump for pulling water out of the ground. She had me laughing talking about freezing her ass off using it in the winter. She'd hold out as long as she could waiting for a glimmer of sunlight to peek through the trees hoping it'd raise outdoor temps a couple of degrees,
