I'm thinking about this. We might really do it but I'm nervous as hell about it. Have any of you guys ever just changed locations like that? It's 1800 miles. I won't have any friends there except for a couple of family members. It's kind of scary to me. I don't have a perfect plan just yet and that really bothers me.

I have before.....Moved to LA, CA from NY once not knowing where I was going to live or end up at. I did ok, but missed NY, so I came back after awhile.

Good luck if that is what you decide to do.

Yes it was a great experience looking back now... gotta know in life when to preserve to stay yourself.

Not gonna live in the loft of a barn again in winter with no running water or insulation.

But in times, good will come and its how i got my dog.

    Weed helps too...

I did when. I wanted to leave my X behind. I needed to fly like a free bird and I left nearly everything behind. Took what I could put on a purlator and gone. From Ontario to BC not knowing how it would turn out. I came with nine guys who were all looking for the same thing. All friends. It was the best move I ever made. Of the ten of us 8 never did well here and they went back hoping for their jobs back.
I ended up buying a store and did that for 4 and half years, then sold it and got a job and then on to another job and now I am working for myself again and still lovin it here.
I hope if you do it you have good luck like I did. It was a a tough go for a while but I said I wasn't leaving here no matter what and I held up till things got better.
I came for the weather and the mountains and I have lived in all but 2 provinces in Canada and this is by far the best place to be. It changed my life, showed me I am a survivor when things get rough. I'd do it again if there was any better place then here to live but this is it for me now.
Good luck, which ever you decide to do.

Yes. Australia - Germany. It was kinda planned I mean I was always going to end up back in Europe or Scandinavia but I kinda guess it was like a "ah well let's blow this Popsicle stand".

    quite a few times.
first was when I was 16 and i was put into the foster system, a new place a new culture a new way of life. definitely difficult and terrifying.
second was when i was 19 and i moved to Arizona.... my friends had all gone to college, i broke up with a guy i'd been with a while, wanted to live somewhere cheaper.
most recent was moving aboard over a year ago. i was somewhat flippant about the decision and really had no idea the implications.... again, a new home, a new culture, a new way of life, it was very difficult adjusting.... but fun, and so worth it. all my coworkers and friends thought i was absolutely nuts, quitting my really well paying job to go become a pirate.... best decision i ever made!

I'm very rooted and I love it. I have strong family ties and a strong sense of community. However, my partner and I do want to move sometime in the future when we're more established in our careers, if only for the experience and if only for a couple of years. I would like to wait until my son is older as its very important for me to have those close family ties while he is young.

I thought that you lived on a boat? Or is it docked year-round?

i've done so multiple times in the past. long past now though.

it's good if you're not attached to dragging a lot of crap around with you,
and a 'good' (maybe) way to get unattached to doing so.

everything you end up replacing though, is that much being wasteful.

and then there's the friendships you make with the spirits of a place,
that you might not even realize you have,
that will try to call you back to it.

and sometimes they're good friends and you need them.

i don't think there's any absolute yes no on this.
but i wouldn't stay stuck in a place because of human people you can't take with you.

Born in Syracuse NY and lived there until I was 17 when I moved to Ithaca NY (about 60 miles away?) Lived there, or within 20 miles of there, for 20 years and moved to Ohio in 1990. My sister got me to move here and also convinced my brother to move and then she moved to New Mexico within a couple years. So much for being near family. Just as well really, I can't stand her. She recently moved to Vermont. My other sister lives in Virginia.

My parents decided to move here in 2002 because I was the only "stable" child who could look after them as they aged. (Brother had moved to CA in the mid 1990's He was their other option. He has since moved back to Ohio)

I will likely stay here for the rest of my time although Ithaca still tugs at my heart. I loved it there.

my only move to be near anyone, ever, was back to cali in 87. and that was only part of the reason. (i left there to go north in 77. which was also for mixed reasons)

mine have always been to seek greener pastures. AWAY from familiar humans and their social complexes. not that i wished to leave EVERYONE behind. there have been one or two in particular i was especially sorry to have left.

    Thanks for the responses. :)

My thing is that I hate moving to begin with. When I was a kid we moved a lot until I eventually moved here to live with my dad. That was in the summer after 9th grade....it was my 13th time transferring schools since 1st grade. Then I lived with my dad in the same place after that and I still live here 21 years after graduation. My family has very deep roots here (they were some of the people who started this town), there is a park named after my dad, I own a business here and play in a fairly well known (around here) band. It's a town of about 14,000 people and I could easily live here comfortably for a long time.

But....I don't want to live here for my entire life. There are things about this area that I hate and some people never get out of this town. They go to school here, work some crummy job forever and die here. I want my daughter to know she can go wherever she wants in this world. She's not stuck here. So the kicker is....to move...I basically have to gamble everything I have in hope of something better. But....I've got what I have by gambling everything I had multiple times in the past. Or I can move and keep my assets here but then I'd have to make trips back fairly frequently and run the business from out of state. The upside to that is that if things don't work out...I can probably just come back and pick up where I left off.

The grass is always greener on the other side.... Because you aren't standing on it looking down at the dirt.

Mmm, I moved around a lot as a kid. I've noticed it might have left a "bored here" stamp on my forehead, I've been getting itchy feet for a while now.. but after thinking about it, whatever I think I need to learn from doing so can actually be applied in my current circumstances.
The shit I need to learn is the shit I don't want to do. Since I'm pretty comfortable moving around, I'd rather do that and face the unknown comfortably and hope whatever it is I want to get from moving will kinda drift by for me to pluck out of the air. But, I could just get up and greet the shit that I'd rather avoid and get it over with. I've noticed it can be pretty fun, feels good to breathe afterwards, lighter. It's probably worth doing a lot more of it though :D

But yeah, fuck knows - I've tried to place myself in the worst case scenario to see if the potential benefits are worth putting up with the shit at the bottom..

Yeah...I know. I don't have it bad where I am and I have nothing to really complain about. But I think the place we'd be moving to is one of our favorite places in this country. If I stay here...I'm basically at the top of my pay scale...I can make more but not really substantially more without substantial investment. Plus, this business is kind of boring to me. I just do it for the money mostly these days. I'm more satisfied with a lot of things going on at once. I've been doing this for too long (and I'm still alive and well so my wife wants to know when I'm going to stop pushing my luck)

If I move, I might make less....or a lot more. We are in the beginning stages of writing a business plan for something completely different. We have found some rural land that I am having a hard time not putting an offer on and we've been researching possible sites to lease for said business. And I just found out that if I buy that property....there are monks next door and I should keep an eye out for the pot growers. Sounds perfect!

Yes, I moved to Hawaii on a whim. I met my husband there, and now we live in freaking Omaha. This move was for his work, so not exactly spontaneous, but we definitely are not rooted here.
