When people talk to me about the subject, I remind them that people have been killed after a ball game simply for wearing the wrong colored scarf. Human behavior is very odd at times.

Some years ago, a girl who worked with Jane had been chatting and flirting with a guy on the phone for months. After arranging to meet him, she spent days chatting in the office about her expectations and asking everyone what she should wear.
When the day arrived, prior to setting off, she decided to mention on the phone that she was black. He simply slammed the phone down and never contacted her again. It was probably the cruelest thing that I have ever come across in a relationship. Even when Jane told me about it that evening, it was the first time that I had seen tears in her eyes since her youngest sister died.
Although all this was about 30 years ago, I still think about it today.

That’s sad. I’m just wondering why they went all that time without knowing certain details about each other, because that’s usually one of the first things discussed when you initially meet over the phone. But yeah, that’s truly sad.

Perhaps when you meet over the phone in the work environment, it is not quite the same.
I also had a similar experience after chatting to a guy who had a strong cockney London accent for several years. You tend to build up a mental image of someone, so you can imagine my surprise when I dropped in to pick up an urgent order and this wiry little east end guy turned out to be 20 stone and of Nigerian descent. He actually expected me to be somewhat surprised and we had a good laugh about it. He told me that it happened all the time when he met people who he normally dealt with on the phone.
Needless to say, I did not cancel my orders with his company. LOL

We talked on the phone after mutual friends recommended we meet. The subject of race just never came up in any of the several calls. We agree to meet for drinks. The initial surprise was replaced by mutual laughter. Drinks turned into dinners and we were developing a nice relationship. Until we met the other's families.

neither of these things necessarily means they're not racist. i'm not saying that they are; you know them so i trust that you have a better idea than any of us. just that this alone is not evidence of non-racism.

Why do you think that so many people that you don’t even know hate you?

People are surprised when they hear my mum was born in India.. but I've seen my mum cry because of things she was called, first time I heard someone call her, they called her a w@@... I had heard that word, but didnt understand it, when I was told I was shocked they said it to my mum.
Think it taught us all, race and colour, means nothing, we are one world.

  11. I love seeing mixed families.
My adoptive mother was born in holland. So i can relate to this. My relatives on her side of the family are beautifully natured.
Then you get my adoptive father's side of the family and they are your typical aussies. We do have relatives that are from the ukraine who are equally as nice as the ones from holland.

I've got friends who are married to indian people and their families are just beautiful.

My Dad was racist and looked down on African-Americans, which may seem odd, since we were Native American. I think the reasons for it were: (1) tribalism (a tendendcy to favor one's own group against outsiders) (2) culture (southern, from the "Little Dixie" part of our state); (2) economic insecurity (struggled for what we had and feared competition); (3) status insecurity (needed somebody to look down on); (4) poorly educated (not trained to avoid stereotyping on the basis of a few cases; he told that African-Americans were inherently violent, inclined toward crime, promiscuous, and uncleanly); (4) unreflective (not given to questioning his own beliefs; preoccupied with making a living). BTW, he didn't like whites either, for different reasons, althugh he was part white himself. He was an equal opportunity racist. Unfortunately, that profile seems to fit too many people, including some I've encountered on these forums.

This is what racists say. Not to say you are one but they do. That it's normal and OK to not like someone's skin color since they are not in "your tribe"

it's hogwash that does not hold up to any serious scientific study when we clearly define what the differences are. We have much larger brains than other animals. You are better than this come on.

Just to name on example why is it white Europeans do not have the same issues American whites have with black Americans? For some reason they don't serpatre since it's "normal" in France do they? It would seem it is a cultural view not genetics.

Human beings are naturally xenophobic, this has been demonstrated throughout our recorded human interaction with one another, interactions with other animals, even foreign objections for self-preservation. We fear what we do not understand. It's not made-up racist hogwash and not a matter of opinion. The fact that we need to teach children not to be afraid of things they don't understand is the most obvious demonstration of this occurrence.

Lol, people are quick to jump on the "we're just animals" but when it comes to how we operate and think, learn, interact and everything then they kind of stop looking at ourselves as the animals they believe we are and then believe humans should be something more than what we are, with no pre determined animals instincts or any type of behaviour that coincides with our animality.

Ie. They want us to be more than animals, while maintaining being said animals.

So it doesn't matter what our genetics say or tell us about ourselves or why we do the things we do because people are going to turn a blind eye to the realistic implications of who and what we are if at any point they clash with a situation or dilemma they don't like.

On the flip side, they're also quick to then set aside anything else we do as a human and call that out as our animal instincts because we are just animals. :p

If we are just monkeys and apes and you can see what other species of monkeys and apes do to one another out of just being different which is no real difference to humans being racist, then they don't want to acknowledge our animal tendencies which like Stellar has pointed out, is only natural in a human person's created make up etc. It's what we do, it's a part of being that animal.

Still the same. But my Mom and Dad are dead, so they aren't "we" any more. Part Irish but mostly Chickasaw/Choctaw on my Dad's side, part Anglo-German, but mostly Chickasaw on my Mom's side, which is how I got onto the Chickasaw tribal roles.
