Iran blames Israel for killing of nuclear scientist near Tehran

Iran's foreign minister has blamed Israel for the "terrorist" murder of a nuclear scientist and has urged the international community to condemn the killing.

An Iranian scientist that Israel alleged led the Islamic Republic's military nuclear programme until its disbanding in the early 2000s was killed in a shootout on Friday, Iran's state television had said.

Terrorists murdered an eminent Iranian scientist today. This cowardice—with serious indications of Israeli role—shows desperate warmongering of perpetrators

Iran calls on int'l community—and especially EU—to end their shameful double standards & condemn this act of state terror.

    — Javad Zarif (@JZarif) November 27, 2020

Tehran's foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif quickly suggested that Israel was behind the attack.

In a tweet Mr Zarif said: "Terrorists murdered an eminent Iranian scientist today.

"This cowardice — with serious indications of Israeli role — shows desperate warmongering of perpetrators.

"Iran calls on int'l community—and especially EU—to end their shameful double standards & condemn this act of state terror."

Israel declined to immediately comment on the killing of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, who Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu once mentioned in a news conference saying: "Remember that name".

Israel has long been suspected of carrying out a series of targeted killings of Iranian nuclear scientists nearly a decade ago.

State TV Friday cited sources confirming the death.

It said it would offer more information shortly.

The semi-official Fars news agency, believed to be close to the country's Revolutionary Guard, said the attack happened in Absard, a small city just east of the capital, Tehran.

It said witnesses heard the sound of an explosion and then machine gun fire.

The attack targeted a car that Mr Fakhrizadeh was in, the agency said.

State television on its website later published a photograph of security forces blocking off the road.

Mr Fakhrizadeh led Iran's so-called Amad, or Hope programme.

Israel and the West have alleged it was a military operation looking at the feasibility of building a nuclear weapon in Iran.

Tehran long has maintained its nuclear programme is peaceful.

The International Atomic Energy Agency says that Amad programme ended in the early 2000s.

IAEA inspectors now monitor Iranian nuclear sites as part of Iran's now-unravelling nuclear deal with world powers.

How close is Iran to producing a nuclear bomb?

    Reuters
    Dec 1st 2020 10:46AM
A 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers is being eroded and efforts to revive the pact face a new challenge with the killing of Tehran's top nuclear scientist.

The accord's restrictions on Iran's atomic work had one objective: to extend the "breakout time" for Tehran to produce enough fissile material for a bomb, if it decided to make one, to at least a year from about two to three months.

Iran maintains that it has never sought nuclear weapons and never would. It says its nuclear work only has civilian aims.

Tehran began breaching the deal's curbs last year in a step-by-step response to President Donald Trump's withdrawal from the deal in May 2018 and the reimposition of U.S. sanctions.

This has shortened the breakout time but reports by the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which polices the deal, indicate that Iran is not moving ahead with its nuclear work as fast as it could.

European states have sought to save the nuclear deal, pressing Tehran to comply even as Washington has tightened sanctions, and holding out hopes of a change in U.S. policy once President-elect Joe Biden takes office on Jan. 20.

Biden was part of the U.S. administration under Barack Obama that negotiated the 2015 deal.

WHAT HAS IRAN DONE TILL NOW?

Iran has contravened many of the deal's restrictions but is still cooperating with the IAEA and granting inspectors access under one of the most intrusive nuclear verification regimes imposed on any nation.

    * Enriched uranium - The deal limits Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium to 202.8 kg, a fraction of the more than eight tonnes it possessed before the deal. The limit was breached last year. The IAEA report in November put the stockpile at 2,442.9 kg.

    * Enrichment level - The deal caps the fissile purity to which Iran can refine uranium at 3.67%, far below the 20% achieved before the deal and below the weapons-grade level of 90%. Iran breached the 3.67% cap in July 2019 and the enrichment level has remained steady at up to 4.5% since then.

    * Centrifuges - The deal allows Iran to produce enriched uranium using about 5,000 first-generation IR-1 centrifuges at its underground Natanz plant, which was built to house more than 50,000. It can operate small numbers of more advanced models above ground without accumulating enriched uranium. Iran had roughly 19,000 installed centrifuges before the deal.

In 2019, the IAEA said Iran had begun enrichment with advanced centrifuges at an above-ground pilot plant at Natanz. Since then, Iran started moving three cascades, or clusters, of advanced centrifuges to the underground plant. In November, the IAEA said Iran had fed uranium hexafluoride gas feedstock into the first of those underground cascades.

    * Fordow - The deal bans enrichment at Fordow, a site Iran secretly built inside a mountain and that was exposed by Western intelligence services in 2009. Centrifuges are allowed there for other purposes, like producing stable isotopes. Iran now has 1,044 IR-1 centrifuges enriching there.

HOW CLOSE IS IRAN TO HAVING A BOMB?

The breaches lengthened the breakout time but estimates still vary. Many diplomats and nuclear experts say the starting point of one year is conservative and Iran would need longer.

David Albright, a former U.N. weapons inspector who tends to have a hawkish position on Iran, estimated in November that Iran's breakout time could be "as short as 3.5 months," although this presumes Iran would use 1,000 advanced centrifuges that were removed under the deal.

WHAT MORE WOULD IRAN NEED TO DO?

If Iran accumulated sufficient fissile material, it would need to assemble a bomb and probably one small enough to be carried by its ballistic missiles. How long that would take exactly is unclear, but stockpiling enough fissile material is widely seen as the biggest hurdle in producing a weapon.

U.S. intelligence agencies and the IAEA believe Iran once had a nuclear weapons program that it halted. There is evidence suggesting Iran obtained a design for a nuclear weapon and carried out various types of work relevant to making one.

Tehran continues to grant the IAEA access to its declared nuclear facilities and allow snap inspections elsewhere.

Iran and the IAEA resolved a standoff this year that had lasted several months over access to two suspected former sites.

    from nti.org

In April 2014, Israel launched Ofek 10 into space, one of seven satellites currently in orbit and the tenth overall launched. The surveillance satellite is capable of capturing high-resolution imagery in all weather conditions, at all hours of the day. [26] Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon described the satellite as "meant to improve Israel's intelligence capabilities and allow the defense establishment to better deal with threats both close and far."

Israel could join the U.N. Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty . They will not admit they have any such weapons . Iran
could more logically join the Treaty .

But in order for them to do so matey, they would first have to declare they had a nuclear weapons capability, notwithstanding it is widely known that they do, secondly, they would have to make their weapons and nuclear production facilities open to UN inspection neither of which the zionists are likely to do.

B"H, As an Israeli, whether USA gave us the intelligence is a moot point. We give intelligence to America all the time. IRAN in my own lifetime was known as "Persia". It was run by a Shah (King) and we all know about kings. Many Jews lived in Persian empire for 2700 years until 1948 most moved to Israel. Some did not but Israel and Persia had complete peaceful relations. When the Ayatollahs had an Islamic Revolution the rally point was to conquer Jerusalem from the Infidel Jews. From the Jews in Iran we know that many Persians like israel. From the radio broadcasts we make to Persia in Persian we know that many people listen,.basically most Iranians are not against israel BUT Iran has stated they will wipe us out militarily. Israel never said that about Iran, rather the moment the islamic government accepts us as 5 Arab nations have peace agreements with Israel we will make peace. The problem for us is NOT Islam. Islam is closer to Judaism than Christianity. Even as Muslims we can have peace,or if the government becomes secular as many Iranians are secular but are afraid of going to jail or being beheaded, its not easy to say so.Enough the large public riots demanding freedom there. I hope God willing we will have peace. Even if Iran has an atomic bomb, with peace there will be guidlines. But without peace and they stating their will to annhilate us, we will eventually have to attack their strategic areas. The killing of the scientist was a step in that direction and it didn't cost bombing a civilian site.

B"H. You can say that Israel is the 51st state of USA,part of Europe. Or Disneyland 5. The facts are that all the 31 (Thirty one) Muslim nations called war on us. So we could not play sports in Saudia Arabia and we joined the European Basketball League.Same with tennis. In the Olympics which are global Arab nations simply refused to compete with Israel. In 1976 we made complete peace with Egypt. A few years later with Jordan. In the last 4 months we made a complete peace with Abu Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Sudan, Yemen might be soon. An Arab from Abu Dubai bought the Jerusalem Soccer (Football ) team 60%. Now we will be able to play in more Arab nations so this "European Colony" refrain is so patronizing of whoever wrote this original post and it shows a lack of knowledge of very recent current events and modern history. Israel was populated by Jews 3753 years ago, then they went to ancient Egypt to buy food and as all the North African and Middle Eastern nations ended up paying for food by becoming slaves. And we returned to israel 3450 years ago soon after slavery ended. And until 2700 years ago we lived in Israel. We were conquered by the Babylonian Empire 2700 years ago.We didn't run to New York City 2700 years ago or leave voluntarily. We RETURNED by King Corush (Cyrus) of Persia allowing so . Some Jews stayed but most returned to Israel until 2000 years ago when the most evil empire of Rome conquered Israel and exiled almost all of us.We did not go to Melbourne Australia on a plane. In the times of the Christian Crusades low and behold there were a million Jews is sparcely populated Holy Land.We were more than Muslims and Christians. It seems that the Muslims have treated us good for their whole history and Christianity has been practicing their {NOT} love, compassion and turning the other cheek to Jews. They hit us on 1 cheek and turned the other Jewish cheek and smote it too, killing most of the million Jews as well as 100,000 Jews in Constantinople (Istanbul of then). In the Middle Ages we came back in large numbers mainly to our 4 Holy cities as well as Gaza. Gaza was ONLY Jewish in the 11oo's and also the 13hundreds and the 14hundreds each time being exiled. Jews always came back here. Its not a European colony. We were reading and writing 3700 years ago and most Christian nations did not do so as a majority of the population until the 1800;'s. We were literate 3500 years before the Europeans. NOT a colony and don't ever patronize us or distort facts.

B"H ,ADMIT? In 1960's 70's the Soviet Union armed Egypt,Jordan and Syria,Iraq. I was already 2 years in the Israeli army when in 1973 the Syrians and Egyptians made a simulated attack on us on our holiest day of the years when most Jews fast 25 hours and only pray. They made quick advances. i fought in Syria and we lost 12 of our 75 men dead. Israel has publically said forever that we have had the Atom bomb its in Dimona. The bomb was readied at a point where it seemed that Israel the size of New Jersey but 8 miles wide at its narrow point was about to be cut in half. The fact is ,we lost a gigantic percentage of our soldiers dead and yet, we did NOT use the bomb. There have been other times. The fact is, its a loaded gun and it speaks loud.Any Arab leader with half a brian knows not to push to annhilate us though we were close to using force when Sandam Hussein attacked us for months bombing us with long range rockets. The USA President asked us not to retailiate in any form. We agreed. In 2006 my family as well as almost all israelis in the north part of Israel were bombed with rockets from Lebanon by Hizballah and instead of using the Atom bomb we were told to evacuate our homes for 4 months and so it was. USE the Atomic Bomb? We only know of one nation who has.

Look in google search "Dimona Core" Or Dimona (city) what do they call an atomic bomb site like we have? We never used it even when the Soviet Union vastly weaponized the Arabs and they attacked us and we came close to winning and in the end we won the war, having lost the first battles by surprise and good Arab -Soviet planning.Read my coments below exactly when and how we could have used said bomb. In no way will we ever give the world any reign on our atomic power.Neither does China,Russia or the USA. They close down many sites by agreement and keep them as a possbility. Without the atomic bomb we would not have been attacked in 6 wars but 600. Before the stae of Israel became independent hundreds of thousands of Jews were massacred by their Arab next door neighbors. SEARCH "Arab Clan Wars" in any Arab nation. They have revenge as a major civilization theme. For generations one clan kills another of the other Arab clan and then they take revenge. Its part of theor culture as well as art is an Arab culture, they developed mathematics and medicine and science ut always clan wars clan (Khamullah)
