I called my cafe job Washing the Wishes . And do not allow anyone to yell at you . Enforce this with all your spirit !
i've never officially been a "dishwasher," but in my years working in pizza delivery and management i worked at least one shift in at least 14 different restaurants (i'm sure i'm forgetting a few, it's been several years). in all cases, dishwashing was everyone's job. of course, different stores had different systems, so the person who had the greatest dish responsibility varied, but it was always a shared job. it was super easy (especially in stores with dish machines rather than the 3 sink system, although both were easy) and was actually one of the less frustrating jobs because it was one area where you could actually see your progress as you turned the giant pile of dishes into a clean countertop. everyone should be able to answer the phone. even if it's not something that the dishwasher does often, they should be able to jump in and help out if there's one person answering phones and 4 lines on hold. yeah, unless it's a super high volume restaurant, the boss has to do grunt work at times. i've worked with a couple who were unwilling, and it was just not possible for them to meet their targets that way and they ended up being quickly fired.
It's just a tiny little restaurant. It isn't opening until next week. I'm guessing I'm the only one who applied for the job. I told her I don't have restaurant experience and that I'm not usually good at things and she hired me anyway.
You will do well I am sure. Go in with the attitude that you will master doing it and you will. Good luck on your new job!!!
I'm trying to think about it this way. Thanks. I tried to hit the like button but I got a you-have-reached-your-like-button-limit message.
I know this doesn't help, but at the first sign of a new boss shouting "SPOTLESS!" I would be all "Do them yourself, bitch!"
thats bad that its a tiny place...that means youll probably have do it old school they probably wont have any fancy machines on the bright side if its a new place everyone is new and everyone will be making mistakes which is wayyyyyyy better than being the new guy in an established place
Actually, I was kind of stressing over having to work some sort of machine I don't know how to operate. I'm REALLY bad at that kind of thing.
if they have a machine its basically just open the door...slide the tray in and press a button then go load and rinse the next tray while it does its thing
Sounds like the easiest job in the world that no one could fuck up. You could begin by practicing at home, hell we all do but don't get paid. Hotwater
Cuts in hot water suck, especially with that industrial soapy shit they put in the machines. Your legs will get tired but busier hours should allow you to forget that. Its not always gonna be busy so ALWAYS have a plan. Sweep, organize, do something. Never do nothing. Realize that they know you'll get slammed. Its why you're there. Go as fast as you can, and they will see that. Be pleasant and never joke or bitch about your job. Even if its empathetic like with a fellow worker. That shit spreads through a restaurant like a plague and it slows everything down, including when you get to go home. Realize that its your first job, and there is nowhere to go but up from jobs like this. The fast paced environment of a restaurant will prepare you for many fast environments in the future. You'll be able to marvel at how some people just can't hack the pressure. Best of luck! I mean it sincerely.
It could have a bright side but generally the smaller the restaurant and the louder the owner is the more peculiar usually the management is too And not necessarily but it could count for the equipment as well... I agree, the dish washing machine/spray is your friend at this job. If it is not there it does not get better. If you do not know how to operate it yet don't stress it: everyone here tells you it takes little to get used to it. I understand the insecurity if it is OP's first job but I can imagine also it is partly what makes a boss like the one she's gonna get act like she did (I am in no way condoning the yelling). If you show insecurity about dish washing and tell your boss at the interview there's a large chance you fuck things like this up.... Honesty is one thing but not many people would have hired the OP for being this honest Makes me wonder why she did or why no one else applied. Maybe the boss thought well it seems like I can push this person around, why not hire this one
I think there just weren't people exactly lined up around the block to take that job and I showed up for both interviews and seemed enthusiastic enough.
I don't live around there but if there was a dish washing job here in this time of job scarcity I would be suspicious if I was the only one applying for it To be sure: I don't want to scare you in advance! It just sounds a bit odd to me. Wether there is a machine or no machine you can do it! The washing is not the problem. For me personally, I would worry about the multitasking (but I'm a male ).
I worked as a kitchen hand for a couple of months. The chefs were assholes, always yelling for this or that.
I lived in Pakistan and i never did this work, however i think every work have its own importance, but i never did. But i did so many times at my homw, specially when my mother went to her native town
thanks for that link spiff....I am now watching the follow up episode.....yelp says the restaurant is closed now.....that woman and her husband are hard to watch...it is cringe tv
