Harry Reid finally grows a pair

From day one, Harry Reid has been a wimpy Senate majority leader, but he had the balls to make a long-needed rules change today. For federal judges appointed by the President, only a simple majority vote will be needed to confirm them. Filibusters are out, for this purpose. A record number of judicial seats are currently vacant, because Republicans said that they would not allow anyone to be confirmed who isn't a conservative, and Obama obviously had no intention of appointing any such person. The voters who elected him didn't want him doing that.

I wish Reid would do something about other filibusters. The concept is not mentioned in the US Constitution, but evolved within internal Senate rules. The trick makes use of a rule that says more than a simple majority is required to cut off debate and bring a bill to a vote. Currently, it's 60 votes (out of 100). The intent was for floor debate to be held open until most Senators felt that the issue at hand had been sufficiently debated to the point where they could make an informed decision. During the Obama years, Republicans have decided that there is no reason to ever end debate on a bill and bring it up for a vote unless they know they can win the vote and get their way.

The old rule required every filibuster to involve continuous speaking on the Senate floor. The length of a filibuster was limited by human endurance. Now, filibusters can be silent, so they can theoretically go on forever. This is the rule I want to see gone.

The Constitution has an "advise and consent" comment about Supreme Court nominations, which has been extended by law to all federal judge seats. The idea was to prevent Presidents from filling such jobs with political allies, who might not be qualified to do such jobs. Republicans have abused the "advise and consent" concept by saying that they cannot, in good conscience, approve appointees whose political philosophies agree with those of a Democratic President. This is a part of their win at any cost strategy that has led to absolute gridlock.

And now, Republican leaders are publicly promising to retaliate by making Washington gridlock much worse. Cable news is showing an endless parade of angry GOP leaders vowing revenge.

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Had the Republicans done this we would be seeing the Democrats pulling the same shit in retaliation. It is getting so very pathetic. Both parties have lost every single ounce of credibility they once had.

Sadly, I don't think that will really change anything. Most Americans, I believe, will simply vote in another person from these same parties. The system itself is broken. America has become too big, too diverse....

The system is broke for sure, and it is very sad but until we show them that we won't put up with this shit it will never change. We have to be more vocal.

Not sure is about being too diverse or to large, I think a major factor however is that the US political system has come out of kilter, unbalanced - with wealth having gained too much power and influence another is that some Americans seem to be following ideologies blindly and without question (just notice the number that come here promoting stuff that they cannot defend from criticism).

Vocal is a start, but I know what you are saying and I feel that will come one day. Just not sure when. It has to change.

Last time they were here, Was to pimp their fucking ethanol gas, Well half water, Half gas. Its the worst thing around and they admit it until a camera is on them and they start 'preaching'.

Yup I agree. People need to mind their own fuckin' business, while a few steal everything they can get their hands on. Hey--I just thought of something. We HAVE been minding OUR own business and letting them do so. Earth is not going anywhere (well, not 'till the sun expands and--you know), but sentient life is going somewhere, if the present course continues. But that's OK. As long as the rich keep adding more zeros to wherever they hide their loot. AND AS LONG AS THEY STILL HAVE SUCK-ASSES THAT WORSHIP THEM AND DEFLECT BLAME FOR THEIR CONTINUING WAYS. All is well. Now go shopping.
