Here in the Uk we have B&Q, which is a hardware store i went there today, no issues with staff until two things happened
    1. Another shopper dropped a plant pot (ceramic) on my toes
    2. I stepped on a bag of nails :(

anyone else had unfortunate issues in stores?

?? Why were you standing so close to another customer? How can you possibly step on a bag of nails? #1: wouldn't you see it? #2: wouldn't you feel it right away?

I dont see the problem with bags of nails. Walkover those all day.

I did once land on a screw pointed up in a parking lot stuck me pretty good. Stop pull it out, bleed...

Flip flops sandles your pretty much barefoot anyway when it comes to falling objects flower pots or anything so being totally barefoot not an issue in that case .

after years of barefooting I have learned to instinctually watch for predict falling object hazards , but if a second party screws up that sucks.

If everyone went about barefoot, nothing like this would happen! Still, OP, I think those people at the store have something against you...
