the driving thing is scary - there are no laws about drink driving, & you can make your own rules, but putting your safety at the forefront works.. most people come home safe..
LOL. I can recall culture shock. Like back in 1979 when we went from San Francisco to London, Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam for 3 months. LOL. Now that was culture shock! Let me tell ya. I was so excited that I couldn't get any sleep for two days before the flight, and I couldn't get any sleep sitting upright in the plane seat either, on the direct 13 hour flight over the north end of the Hudson Bay in Canada. Came straight south over Scotland to Heathrow. Bused into town to a youth hostel off of Queensway off the north side of the Hyde Park. Still couldn't sleep. I had the very worst splitting headache from the west to east jet lag that I've ever had in my entire life. Walked up and down the Queensway Road searching for a pharmacy looking to buy some Sudafeds, a common pill for headaches in the U.S. which worked very well for me back home. I really needed something heavy duty for that headache. Turns out that I needed to find a Chemist, not a pharmacy. I asked the chemist were he kept the Sudafeds, as I couldn't find them on the shelf. Told him that I had a splitting headache. The old chemist looked at me as though I was about to rob the place at gunpoint. He was stunned. Didn't quite know what to say. I said, "Pseudoephedrine Hydrochloride." He said,"Yes. I know what it is." Then remained silent. I explained that it was a common over the counter headache medicine in California. Then he understood. He said that it is a prescription medicine here in London. That I can't buy that without a doctor. I laughed and said that I understood. Asked if he could recommend something else for me. And he did. LOL And that is in a country where we speak the same language, supposedly. LOL Don't get me started on levers and jacks. That one was in front of Whitehall.
it sounds like you had the down side of culture shock Kenny.. 'everything is different here, I want to go home'.. I had read that it's like the high of falling in love & that was my experience in Thailand, my first venture outside of europe.. it was paradise, the smiling faces, the friendliness of fellow travellers, the light bright sunshine, so many things, but after a few weeks things went wrong, my stash of dollars were stolen, my foot was swollen from an infection, I had to go away on the visa run & I plunged into the down side.. you come out of the doldrems but you never regain that wonderful high experienced at the beginning.. Tiger mentioned his plans not working out & that is something all travellers say.. just don't make any cos nothing ever goes according to plan! I never had jetlag on the outward journey, but always when I came home.. nothing painful, just drifting off to sleep - more like slipping into unconsciousness.. all of it is part of the big adventure.. Tiger, I might be in south korea when you come to liverpool..
Penguins, does that mean that that is his last show??? Mallyboppa, I'm happy for you. A good change. The Sun has been shining here all along and it will be 109 today. LOL Maura, I totally loved the culture shock differences. It was all too fun. Life is one big adventure. I'd love to go back to Europe. If I went to Thailand it would necessitate me having wads of cash. I'd be there shopping for sapphires. The true unheated untreated sapphires are almost impossible to find now-a-days. And they are top price. High end business. I might even like it too much and move there. Especially if I could buy top quality for a good price and sell via the internet to high end jewelers. Hummmm, And idea.
Kenny...the best place for sapphires is Ratnapura(Sri Lanka)Ratnapura means==city of gems... I bet if you go there==you could do a good deal ==that is...If you know about the value of the stones... I've not been to Ratnapura itself....but..I heard one can even go down and visit a working gem mine... Sri Lanka deserves a visit,Kenny...this is the Beruwala market between Mount Lavinia and Hikkaduwa... P.S...let the you tube continue...it is another one on sapphire stones... https://www.youtube.com/embed/Qn4s4W4ivb8?list=PL1198B2C53CDE555B
yes the daily show with john has 4 more shows next mon-thur. he will be greatly missed as a voice of reason among all the crazy politicians. even if i disagree with him a bit i can always see how he is just trying to make things better.
Tiger. Thank you, my Man. I watched that. Cool. Yes I would like to travel and trade in various parts of the world. I have studied gemology and I'm pretty good at it. Detecting real gems from fakes and synthetics and glass. Detecting real natural from heated and /or treated. 99% of corundum or sapphire/rube are heated in a kiln to just short of the melting point to create a visually clear stone. Today they just do it as a matter of form. It's supper rare to find an unheated stone now-a-days and those are the real rare gems. High dollar items. I'd love to run away to Sri Lanka and also to Thailand and Myramar. I have purchased items on-line from Kanchanaburi Thailand before. Some good and some bad. There's a whole lot of bad out there. Anyhow, I'm mostly into the science of it. Crystals. Telling the good from the bad. That's where my head is at. Knowledge and knowing what is real and expensive. It sure would be fun to actually trade and be in business in high value precious gems, though. Perhaps some day. Traveling the world and trading. Finding the best and selling to an exclusive list of people and jewelers. Wow. Easy money. Big money. That could be cool. Traveling the world. And, while working. LOL Neat!
Hey Penguin, Maybe John Stewart should run for president. What do ya think? Hey everybody else is. So, why not? I'm going to have to get back in the habit of tuning in, again. Thanks.
I have a theory that the people who are smartest to run for office are smart enough to know not to run for office.
Now that's odd, because I'm smart and I am thinking of running for office. If I ran for president would you register to vote and vote for me?
I am registered but not going to vote. The problem is that jury duty is picked from voters and I lose a day pay if I get picked for jury duty. So there is more of an upside for me to not vote.
LOL. Most of the time, 4 out of 5 they don't pick you for jury duty, anyhow. But, you're right,it does take 3 hours out of your day just to report in and wait. But that could still leave 5 hours of work. You can always fill out there form and say that you are indigent and cannot afford to loose an hour of work. Anyhow.
However, I believe that if you are registered to vote you are in the registered pool. Also D.M.V. You had a license, correct?
No i cant. Work pays for the day off. The problem is the day after. I will have spent all day at jury duty then 4 hours later i have to go to work.
Mallyboppa, It's a stipend. Something like your gas money and token ware and tare on your car. Nothing real. Some minor amount. I was referring to the initial showing up Call. I reported in and we all hung out for 2 1/2 to 3 hours. About 45 people for 2 or 3 juries. Turned out that the cases were resolved or plead, and all of the people got told thanks and to go home. No one was needed. I think that they mailed me a check for $12. for my time. That's nothing if you're making $30 or $40 an hour, but it's about as good as minimum wage. LOL
