Mithra was born the same day. The days start to become measurably longer by Dec. 25th, signalling that winter will not just keep getting colder and darker, and eventually ending with no sun and death to all. So the 'Sol Natalis' label is to celebrate that the sun is reborn for another life, and will grow every day here on out. Just for the skimmers, who may not have made the connection, there is a parallel with Jesus there. The birth of the Son.....the birth of the Sun. I see a possible link, what do you think?
I'd have to look it up, the greek is a bit dusty; but i believe the greak word for sun is sol, and for son is hious (or something that sounds like that with greek letters). Nevertheless, Constantine clearly connected the two and it was not a contradiction for his "Christian" faith. What then is to be said about the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Liturgical Calendar (Julian), the og calendar for the Roman See as well (Julian unitl the 1500s, then Gregorian), using January 7th as the date for the nativity?
haha happy birthday Jesus!, I know its a little late, but then again , I am sure He doesn't mind I had so much fun on his birthday though, Did any one see "Jesus of Nazareth" movie shown in the history channel? It was so awesome, it was saturated with the pure and blissful love of the Lord, it was great! . Jesus was so tolerant, full of love, and accepted everyone, I wish everyone was like that, then the world would be an entirely different place.
Well in the bible Jesus said that many would come in His name, and yes, apparently the Jesus of the bible was right again. Matthew 24:4,5. Jesus said that we should not be deceived by those other "Jesuses." And He also states that when he returns, His return will be like lightning. Matthew 24:27. Thankyou Phantasm, for reminding me about the other "Jesuses" that the real Jesus said would come. Just another example of fulfilled and truthful bible prophecy.

I see a possible link, what do you think? well, in the English language... I don't disagree with you, but that's not really good evidence. I agree, it is not good evidence. To be honest I did not mean to present it as evidence, just as a parallel between the two celebrations. One celebrates the birth of the sun, which they revered as Holy, and the other, the birth of the Son, their saviour. The fact they share the same date is just something I found interesting. I don't see it proving anything. I have always resisted the use of the phrase 'I don't disagree'. For some reason it bugs me. Just one of my many idiosynchrosies, or quirks.
Thanks for the info Blackguard! But what about the date discrepancies between the East and the West (see previous post) for the liturgical date?
what about happy birthday joe?? no one cares about the closet jesuses by the way jesus christ superstar is awesome
Not sure what to make of the discrepancies. Just that the shepherds being in their fields when Jesus was born seems to imply a non-winter date. I know that March 1 was at one time considered New Years. That is why the prefixes Sept, Oct, Nov, and Dec do not line up with the months number in the current format, being the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th months of the year, in contradiction of their names.
I know that Christmas is most likely not a history date for the birth of Christ. All I am saying is there may have been other reasons on the minds of Church Fathers other than festivals celibrating Appollo, Mithras, etc. Yet even if Christians did borrow, I don't think it's a bad thing, that's just how culture works!
well, that solves that then......... I would say what is with most of the people interested in Yeshua Ben Joseph, is a deep admiration of the attitude changing message that was brought to us, profoundly affecting the future, right up till now.
