SOOOOOO my sleeping schedule is fucked right now. just woke up a bit ago 4:30am and dont have anything to do until like 5:00 this afternoon. Dont wanna sit around watching tv or something all day sooo i think i wanna make a pipe (my glass one broke a few days ago) and do some painting today im going to hobby lobby in a few hours and ill buy like a cheap beginner wood carving kit. My question is does anyone know what type of wood to use ? (im guessing its not your average 2x4 from lows) Where to get it? Do you have to add anything to the wood to stop it from burning or does it just build up a natural coating from the heat and resins? (heh just laughed after i thought about wood building up a tolerance to smoking weed just like humans, lol im stoned ) (i have a hand carved wooden small ashtray my dad made that is impossible to burn lol) My grammar is really on () today?
Carve it out of pine, and once you're happy with it you gotta soak it in paraffin for a week to seal it properly.
My sleep is fucked up too, my wake time shifts around the clock and once or twice a week or so I have to pull an all nighter cuz I couldn't go to sleep. Show us when ur done!
well yeah i ordered a new glass one. But i just like things i make myself ill probably rarely use it but i think it will be cool to have ya know lol
Just to cover my ass, I wasn't being serious.. I was trying to be funny. Don't use pine, it's fucking awful to carve, and paraffin is highly flammable and won't seal anything. It'll probably evaporate by the time you get round to using it anyway, but just incase..
Yeah, no pine & paraffin. The best type of wood to use is some type of dense hardwood, I've seen pipes made out of oak, cherry, teak, and some really dark, super hard wood but can't remember what it's called. Zebra wood?? Don't coat it with anything. The oils from your hands will give it a nice finish in no time. At most you can put a brass or steel bowl into it to help keep the wood from burning. personally I like letting it get a char and resin coat and it works just fine for years.
Fruit or nut woods would be best... Steer clear of the exotic woods some can gas out some toxic shit. I usually use an antler pipe myself but have used a lot of woods too. Soapstone is a nice alternative as well and very easy to work.
you can carve soapstone? with drills or what? that'd be pretty bad-ass to have a home-made soapstone pipe! i've tried an antler pipe before too. my friend ended up giving it to me...and i think i must have given it to someone else. can't recall right now. would be cooler if it's from a deer you killed, or at least a dropped antler that you found. this antler pipe was purchased i'm pretty sure.
I don't hunt but antler drops or purchases can net some nice pieces to work with. They sell pieces in pet food stores as dog chews.
