And other tales of interest... Today I read that 79 year old actor Harrison Ford is making his way down the Carreteria Transpeninsular. His journey began in Tijuana. Along the way south he overnighted in a favorite place of mine in San Quentin, the Mission Santa Maria. Now he is heading through the deserts and mountains, a long haul. Hans Solo will have to call on the force to be with him (along with a large support crew) to get all the 1000 miles down to Cabos San Lucas. Harrison Ford rides a bike through Baja Peninsula
He's staying at the best hotels, as I pointed out. Seriously, there's not much of any crime coming down here on that highway... this is not Chiapas or Culiacan states where you'd get skinned alive doing that! In this area we always hear tales of someone who got a flat on that stretch and the next car full of Mexicans to pass by would fix it or go for help, cheerfully! They also run something called the Green Angels here, roadside assistance when needed There are police checkpoints getting into Baja, and down the highway. They are always looking for and stopping the usual suspects.
Today Harrison Ford has reached the town of Mulege, a god-forsaken spot if there ever was one! Here he was yesterday telling everyone that he is going to be in the next installment of Indiana Jones and will begin filming later this year.
It has become apparent to me that this is a publicity stunt. There is no way he could have bicycled his way so far in so few days. He obviously rode his bike in and out of some towns along the way, and rode in his white van the rest of it. Here he was in La Paz last evening.
According to Google Maps it is 486 kilometers to Mulege and would take 25 hours by bicycle. He was here in less than ten hours. How's that work Han Solo?
Ha, you'd think so, but no, lots of people saw them getting in to the vans outside of town And it is not all downhill, sorry... many steep hills and a lot of desert to cross. It took me most of a day to drive from Mulege to La Paz, at way more than 30 mph. Anyway, I was in the Jardin Velasco last evening at 7 PM and saw the white vans arrive with all the bicyclists riding inside. The Catedral Hotel where they stayed is next door to the Catedral de Nuestra SeƱora de La Paz. (Last Night's Picture) And here they are on the balcony... I don't mean to disparage the American Iconic Film Star, it's all good fun.
Well I saw him! On the waterfront yesterday, we were sitting on a bench and all of a sudden a pack of like twenty bicyclists came up the road with a security van in front, and another one behind the group... as they passed we waved, and there was Han Solo waving back at us as he sailed on by...on the way to the beach obviously! So he does ride a bicycle... at his age it is a marvel. He looked happy as can be.
They say there's a place down in Mexico where a man can fly over mountains and hills and he don't need an airplane or some kind of engine and he never will.
Carlos Castaneda? Many brujos in these mountains. There are a few mad monks around also, and a Buddhist or three. It's an energy whirlpool here at the end of Baja.
OK, you got me... I'm all ears We have donkey trails and dirt tracks, mountains, eagles and hawks, vultures, brujos, brujas, and cadrone cactus as far as the eye can see in the Vizcaino Desert. Must a be lot more visions to enjoy...
