Hi all! Read thru NP's FAQ like a good little lemming. Here is my question. I tried dreads last year. I was pregnant and figured if I was gonna look and feel like shit, I might as well try some dreadies. We only ever used Dr B as a shampoo so I had no residue to contend with. I tried the "neglect" method -- I washed my hair 2-3 times per week with Dr B and didn't comb it. I did that for 3 months before my boss mentioned something and I decided that I might as well wait for my maternity leave to really give them a go. So I washed my hair again and took the brush to it. Guess what? Not. One. Single. Knot. Nothing, not one, not a single twist or snarl. It was such a letdown -- three months of looking like a shag carpet and nothing to show for it. I never used conditioner or any product whatsoever and nothing happened. It had sectioned a bit but otherwise was completely unaffected by my no-brushiness. I tried just having a single tnr near my face but that didn't do much either, just hung there and looked like a fuzzy braid. Grrrr. Anyone else have hair that just didn't seem to want to lock up? My hair isn't even pin straight! It's wavy and healthy. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Dr B isn't actually a residue free shampoo, I doubt this played a huge role, but it's worth mentioning. Neglect is by far.... by far! the most unpredictable, varied and slowest method. Some people can find their hair starting to section off after a few weeks and then there are those who've been at it for over a year who's hair still looks like... well.. hair.
I just started neglect a few months ago after having my baby, and it has been pretty slow going. Especially in the beginning. I had just chopped 12" of hair to donate, and my hair was so thick and healthy, it just didn't tangle! It's been about five months now and I have some dreads that are tightening nicely. I think you just have to give 'em LOTS of time. Also, I want to reiterate on the Dr.Bronner's subject, it does leave residue it is a soap, not a detergent. I have very hard water, and when we use it as hand soap, it leaves visible residue all over the sink!
