I have little need for machines, so I now do 90% of my workouts in the privacy of my home and have found it's so much better than going to the gym. I've got an Olympic bench (w/ squat rack) with about 600 lb. of weight, an Olympic bar, an e-z curl bar, and a set of dumbbells and kettlebells. Oh, and I have a stationary bike to do intervals on. I go to the gym once or twice a week to utilize some of the leg machines and am usually out within about 30 minutes.
Unfortunately, the bench I have does not have one, though I bought it anyway because it was on sale and appeared to be very sturdy.
Yea im not sure why some people use like a smith machines for benching and squating. It's not really a natural movement when done that way. Or people will use some weird machine to do bicep exercises when the best can be done with barbells and dumbbells. The only machine I use is the stairmaster. I will occasionally use it at a high intensity at the end of my workout.
I never had any problems jogging around the block or using my own body weight as a form to tone my areas up. Gyms cost a fortune, so I keep hearing. I'm just gone keep jogging in the evening looking at stars and keep my wallet heavy with cash for better things.
I do it all at home. Body-weight, elastics, and a coupla dumbells is all thats needed. I don't do random exercises though, It's a strict synergistic whole body routine developed for martial artists. It's not a routine for bulking up, but mostly for tone and strength. I wish I was still in a judo club. If you are in good enough shape for judo to start with, one 3-5 minute 'randori' twice or 3 times a week gives all the workout anyone needs for maintenance.
I have no idea how much my gym costs. I thought about getting a home gym but then it would take up space that I'd rather use in other ways. Plus...why spend the money when I can have my gym around the corner with practically everything I could ever imagine needing. I don't even use the pool...but I could go there right now and use it if I wanted to.
I have a gym membership. I should use it more than i do. I really need to get back to hiking mountains.
I do too, these days. I just bought a kettelbell, sometimes I enjoy running, jumping exercises, yoga, or the elliptical/stationary bike. I like to switch things up. It's too cold here to run outside, and I like having the option of the gym. Planet fitness is only $10 a month around here. Not a bad investment, I don't think.
isn't that the place where they give out free pizza and doughnuts? And don't allow people to lift heavy weights, or do some compound exercises like deadlifts?
well it does make it slightly easier to do those exercises without a spotter. but more importantly, it takes away most of the weight of the bar, so they can then tell people that they were just doing about 40 pounds more than they really were.
