This was written and produced by David Bowie. Mott The Hoople had a cult following in England and Bowie was a big fan. The problem was, they weren't selling many albums and were about to break up. When Bowie heard this, he offered to produce their next album and provide them with a hit song. He offered them "Suffragette City," but they didn't like it, so he gave them this instead. It became a big hit and kept the band going a few more years. Besides producing this, Bowie played guitar, sang backup, and clapped. Even though the band was heterosexual, this became a gay anthem. This was the nature of "Glam Rock," a style that emerged in England in the early '70s where singers performed in makeup and feminine clothes while playing bombastic rock songs. The performers were not necessarily gay, but they definitely blurred gender roles. Bowie may have been the biggest influence on Glam Rock.

Haha a bunch of them were . of course many of them later on marry a women later or almost at the end of peak as a band . David Bowie is a fine example . Elton try but did not work.
They exploded in the mid/late 80's cuz their music was fantastic. But due to Axl (sp?) Roses' horrendous face lift, collagen lip injection and god knows what else he subjected himself to i have to agree with Toketrip's last comment above. Not a fan of their music anyway.
I remember the article in rolling stone, like in the late 80's, it kinda introduced Guns & Roses, i was at my G-Pop's house, i read it aloud to all the kids, ( cousins, my brother & an Uncle ), my brother scoffed at the part about them throwing a vodka bottle against the wall, i then pointed out to him, that the last bad ass rock band we had in america was led Zep, ( and they were limies ), well, i took interest, & in 1991, i took a bus trip with some hippies out west to az. , then i caught a greyhound to california, the day i arrived in califorina, i got a ticket to the guns & roses show in costa mesa, it was days after the incident where Axel clocked a photographer in St Louis, he was all pissed off again because some radio station was flying over head in a helicopter, skid row opened up, the show was hot, i had a sheet of acid i scored at giantes stadium in new jersey, which was off the hook, so i was dosed, show was all good, beer guys were so impressed that i had traveled all the way from new york to see the band after they carded me, ( we got to be instant friends ). Well, The following dec. inbetween blues traveler & dave matthewes shows, Guns & Rorses played madison square garden in new york city, i was back home there then, Axel had the flu, but rather than cancel the show, he come on out & sat in a plaid bathrobe, & made the show happen as best as he could,it was as well a hot show. I was so into the band then. It was later that Axel pissed off the entire world & was blacklisted from the anerican music scene. & 5 years back Slash come out with his very impressive jazz project album which i was very impressed with. All in all, it was a good thing, part of american music history, i have heard that ,axel struck a deal for a new project with a european producer this year. In conclusion, has anyone else noticed that for far too long, that during that era, all rock vocoalists had a high pitched voice?????????
TERRIBLE LIVE BAND TERRIBLE LIVE BAND TERRIBLE LIVE BAND enough said, a bunch of drunks and drug addicts who made their studio music the only thing half decent. Fuck those asshats
That article toched me deeply. I've read it before, yes, and I wrote a song for him consequently. I've always had a thing with Axl, I've always defended him when people tried to put him down. He's so misunderstood, it seems. Makes me sad. I have a sentimental connectionw ith him I can't explain. God.
fuckin legends , every guitar solo reminds me of being a kid. there self destructive style is gonna inspire me to drink a litre of rum tonight
Up there in the list of the biggest fags ever. Although, the riot that occured once people figured out they werent going to show up was decent. I saw a girl get smacked in the face with a chair thrown off the balcony. That was cool, and a soda dumped all over her too. Somehow I just stayed in the middle of the chaos and didnt get touched. hahaha and when I went outside there was fires in the parking lot. Oh yea, and if your wondering why I was even at such a gay concert, it was because I was young and just moved to a new place, and the only kid I knew at the time offered to take me.
LMFAO Relayer WoodstockChild, stfu. I lose a little bit more hope for the children of today everytime you speak. That being said, GnR sucks the big one. They're like AC/DC, insanely over-hyped.
