Jan. 2, 1971 - Glasgow, Scotland; 66 people are killed and 140 are injured when brriers in Ibrox Stadium collapse near the end of a match between Celtic and Rangers and fans are crushed. The incident occurs when fans leaving the stadium are met by a group trying to return after hearing that Rangers had scored an equalizer.

Oh please, can we not go into the footy debate again? Football fans like to kill each other. They just can't use guns. Can we get past that please?

And Boothy, I don't feel the need to own a gun. And I don't. And I won't. The shooting death statistic for Baltimore, the city I live very close to, is around 300 annually. I think it's sick.

I never even knew he'd started a footy debate... and no offense to Americans, but their interpretation of "football hooliganism" is completely and utterly misguided.

The idiot goes completely off the point, pastes statistics about a completely irrelevant issue, and doesn't even state why he is using the statistics. Is anyone else a little confused about what the fella is getting at?

It doesn't matter? More people are killed where I live each year than in any four European nations. FOUR NATIONS vs. ONE CITY. And that doesn't matter?

    Nice guy.

Oct. 20, 1982 - Moscow; 340 are reportedly killed at a European Cup match between Soviet club Spartak Moscow and Haarlem of the Netherlands. Police are blamed for pushing fans down a narrow, icy staircase before the end of the match. When a late goal is scored, exiting fans try to re-enter the stadium and create a "human mincer." Moscow officials dispute the claims made in the publication of the Soviet Sports Committee, saying only 61 died and police did not push fans. NOT BAD FOR JUST 1 DAY NOT ANNUALLY!.

    Like american football? Fuck off...

You haven't a clue about football violence (yes it's called football).

Football violence-related deaths in the UK average out at about 1. Seriously.

Read the list of school massacres.

Perhaps, but your hooliganism surpasses our barbarism. Percentage-wise, of course... ;)

Was that directed at me? I don't think so but just checking.

It matters a lot, which is why I am trying to argue that there IS a problem and it does need dealing with.

Unlike "USA in decline" who seems to think that it's OK because over in Europe, there are a few one-off football related deaths [IMG]

May 9, 2001 - A stampede at a packed soccer match between two of Ghana's leading teams killed at least 100 people Wednesday night, hospital officials said. Accra's Hearts of Oak was leading Assante Kotoko 2-1 with five minutes left in the game when Assante supporters began throwing bottles and chairs onto the field, witnesses said. Police then fired tear gas, creating panic in the stands.

True there may be many more sport related violent incidents in Europe than the USA... but I still don't understand where that fits into gun control :S

I don't support football violence. I just think it's irrelevant in a discussion about the US gun policy....

Oh and on the football violence debate...

Football is used as an excuse to cause harm. Guns are used as the method of doing so.

    Two very different things.

The UK has a ban on hunting. Pretty much all kinds now. The fox hunting and greyhound coarsing (dunno what it's called) ban was introduced a couple years back.

You can't just say "all guns are now illegal" in America, because there are too many guns. Here is how I would do it.

    • The government would start giving incentives and openly support the handing-in of firearms. Heard of the UK knife amnestys? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/5010954.stm - theres a link. Many people handed in their knives without fear of penalties.
    • Gun control get progressively tighter. Much more restrictions on buying guns, and tracking who owns them - also, gun licenses need to be taxed higher and higher. Progressively, the government needs to make it harder to obtain weapons.
    • Work on destroying the ideology that owning a gun is a right... educate - again, gradual progression is the key. Nothing would be solved with one swift, strict law - it would change nothing.
