If trying to look badass plays a big role in motivating a person to murder, the problem isn't the gun.

  2. The gun is a part of the problem. Guns should have never been invented, and I wish they hadn't been. There are other ways to hunt. Hunting is not the equivalent of guns. Guns are an intricate machine that kills. Meaning people set their minds to creating a way to destroy life in a painstaking way. I don't admire that at all.

But yes, the gun is a part of the problem. It's that kind of careless, callous, calculated thinking that is the problem. On a larger scale, war is the problem, and our culture's sheer obsession with violence. Bad ass killers with death machines in every movie theater. Shock and Awe. We are irresponsible with our imaginations, and engender the notion in little kids that you can be someone cool if you kill.

It would be nice if no one started wars. It would be nice if there were no murderers. But there are people who start wars. And there are people who murder others. Taking everyone's guns from them will not stop warmongers or murderers.

    Who's taking everybody's guns?

  5. It isn't just about those that start wars. It's about being a nation that is geared towards war. That's a choice each individual helps to make. As many people as possible should give up their weapons and accept their fate courageously.

I don't choose to make war.

  8. I'm sure you indulge in the empire just like everyone else. Oh, the glory of being an American.

Well you keep saying that what "they" want to do is take everybody's guns away.

In reality what "they" want to do is have improved background checks for all gun sales. Close the loopholes in existing laws. If improved background checks makes you think "they" will take your guns away then maybe you shouldn't have a gun.

    Damned logic...

I don't think you want war any more than I do.

I was answering Neon's statement that he wishes guns were never invented. I said that there would be wars and murders even if all the guns were taken away. In fact, I didn't say "they." I said: "Taking everyone's guns from them will not stop warmongers or murderers."

But don't let that stop you from seeing what you want to see, even if it isn't there.

You're quite fond of the bushes, aren't you; and I'm not talking about the presidents.

Current cameras are good enough to diagnose whether someone has skin cancer. What is coming are invisible terahertz cameras that see any weapons you are carrying, right through your cloths. You won't even see the light shining on you, while a few tens of thousands of drones hover over every major city, capable of zeroing in on a single gunshot in an instant, and reading every gum wrapper on Manhattan simultaneously from a single photograph. They will have swarm technology, and be able to fight like insects and repair each other in flight. Already cities are offering better services such as wi-fi, because they are fucking expensive to live in, and they can protect themselves better too with drones and modern technology.

Virginia is infamous for selling a dozen hand weapons at a time to people from NY, who file off the serial numbers and sell them. The fucking Yankees could not be more pissed off at the rednecks, and intend to return the favor. Sell them all the guns they want, and laugh while they kill each other, and increase the value of Yankee real estate. Imagine even Chicago becoming as peaceful as a walk in the park.

  15. I pay my taxes. I watch movies about heroes who are almost always heroes because they kill. I don't protest in the streets. I don't give up all of my belongings and become a hermit. Essentially, you and I both pay to fund a war machine. And Americans seem to like having the biggest military on Earth. No one directly says it, but we live as if we're untouchable. Who is going to attack us? Mexico? Canada? We're safe and secure, and everything is right as rain in the good old US of A.

Except, clearly it isn't. Our own are going to attack us, that's who. Our own who are raised in a culture of violence, and a need to be seen as dominant, derived from fierce competition at all levels of the social ladder. We don't even know how far into the darkness we've wandered, because it's too dark to see. It's not too late, though. Any step in the right direction will do.

OK so you don’t think people should get guns for defence and never have done?

That you think that guns have no benefit toward tackling crime?

So you don’t think people should not get guns for defence?

    Why?

So there is only a binary choice I either or stance on this?

That is extremely simplistic don’t you think?

And to you this is it truly just a matter of ‘liking’ and ‘disliking’ to you really you can’t see anything beyond just that, there are not more subtle arguments?

Have you never tried to think a little more deeply?

I’ve fought against racism and racist sine I was a teenager (you might say I don’t like racism and they do) are you saying should not argue against racism because I’m not going to persuasion that racism is no good and just allow racists to preach their ideas unopposed?

Many in the pro-gun lobby are just that lobbyists for ease of access to guns, should that go unopposed?

I have used firearms and under a reputable instructor within a gun club, it was mainly shotguns, but as I’ve said that was when I was younger growing up in the countryside and I grew out of it and moved to the city and I mean what would I do with a shotgun in the city? Hunting, I’d rather preserve the wildlife we have rather than shoot it. Keeping down vermin, I think calling a professional exterminator would be more efficient and less time consuming than sitting out on my porch in the hope a rat will show up. As to home defence, well as I’ve said there just doesn’t seem to be the US pro-gunner’s level of fear about that here.

  18. For decades that was indeed the prevailing attitude. That is, once the US caught up with Sputnik. Then decades more of "Who'd attack us?"
And 9/11 changed it to some degree. In a "Mouse that Roared" kind of way it only took a dozen guys to literally shut the US down, especially in the air.

And during the height of BLM (a movement that appears to have been orphaned by the elite left) it only took a few people to jam traffic in any city.

I don't think the modern world realizes how we have literally made humanity more vulnerable than ever. We're readily packed tightly into tunnels, which made the the Tokyo sarin attack all too easy. Our food supply has always been a weak point, and not just for licking ice cream. And most of our passenger aircraft are decades old (and yet, the newer ones seem to fail the most lately).

  19. I have a hard time believing the official record of events on 9/11. The idea that a handful of men who didn't really know how to fly planes carried that out is a stretch of the imagination. The Pentagon attack is especially dubious. No one but an ace pilot could fly a passenger plane that close to the ground without crashing into it. And the fact that our Air Force was unable to intercept the planes, for God knows what reason. It doesn't add up in my mind. If you think a terrorist was able to descend from the sky and then stop a few feet above the ground in order to fly straight into the Pentagon without just crashing into the Earth, I don't know what to tell you.

    (2) A federal registry, I mean, that would turn into a burocrático nightmare for collectors. We don't just buy some gun to say we have one and pretend it's something it's not. It's hard to liken it to something directly relatable except to collectors of something. Those who don't collect/study/trade anything have a mindset that would make it difficult to appreciate the process. They may be tinged by confusion and/or jealousy regarding collecting and collectors of any type.
Collectors typically build their collections for both entertainment/enjoyment and value building. It involves trading, which may mean selling a piece to a fellow collector for money alone, or a swapping of pieces accompanied with a balancing sum. Collectors also look for bargains and sometimes we find one on a piece we're not particularly interested in owning but can use to advantage in trading, so it ends up passing through us.
We also have family heirlooms which we keep and honor to pass down to the next generation.
So imagine if we had to contact the government every time we wanted to make a trade, ask for their permission, and make sure their database is up to date on every piece we own. Privacy issues aside and second amendment infringement notwithstanding - just the diligence and responsibility of the red-tape alone is an overbearing burden. Collectors would become "hoarders". The underground demand would skyrocket and become big like illicit drugs. You can see the ramifications without having to go there.

    (5) I'm confused, but are you suggesting giving the police authority to enter any home uninvited to seek for illegal and/or unsafe conditions? If so... Wouldn't that necessitate overruling unreasonable search and seizure? I'm sure we could look through any home including yours and come up with something we could label as either. People we don't like for whatever reason would become targets while our friends would get off scot-free. Human nature at work. Objectively would be subjective.
Unenforceable regulations would be repealed by the courts, and education campaigns are already rampant. Even the "dreaded" NRA promotes:

At the NRA, firearm education and safety is paramount—that’s why we offer a variety of programs and services to promote the safe handling, use and storage of firearms.
