This video and it's title are very misleading.

Switzerland is a prosperous country with high living standard, education, culture, order, etc.
You could take all the guns and ammunition out of the country and the crime rate would still remain low.

(Except for the banks. If the rest of the world heard Swiss banks weren't protected, the number of robberies would skyrocket.)

No, not when you consider that this whole "gun" debate is just one ongoing bitch session spread over multiple threads over many years.
When a community has become a little "family" as this forum has, remarks such as I made are taken with an awareness of posters personality and are often made with certain members in mind.
You know who you are. :toetap05:

I can completely see it from your perspective as someone new to the discussion.
I'm confident that members familiar with me know that I often use outlandish comments in order to elucidate a point, such as my rant about meat cleavers, and they "get it".

I have always thought that education was probably the answer. Most gun deaths are from large scale massacres. Most of just one person shooting another person. Many of them are committed during other crimes e.g. drug dealing, robbery, etc. With good education you wouldn't have as many individuals feeling the need to go into these other crimes. If you feel like you got nothing to lose because your life isn't heading anywhere, it really doesn't make much difference if you go to prison or not. If you got a good thing going though, you probably will think twice before doing something that will land you there.

Killing people is not the only use for a gun.
Pretty much most ranged weapons were developed for hunting purposes.
Melee weapons were designed with killing people as their primary use.
That's why I call for a ban on all bladed implements of destruction.

How could you consider nuclear weapons to even be comparable to guns????

Tell you what, I'll go to your home town with one nuclear device, you come to mine with one bullet. We will both use our weapons and we will see if they are actually comparable, ok?

You know what, you're correct. sorry.:(

It just sounded like you were equating violence with firearms.

The reason in America we have the right to bear arms is to defend ourselves from criminals and from tyrannical government. If you take the guns away that will not stop criminals from committing crimes. We already have laws in place against missusing firearms all we need is a better enforement of these laws not more laws agianst firearms. In every instance where firearms were taken from the citizens either the government started civil disrest or the crime rate went through the roof.

1. In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915-1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves against their ethnic-cleansing government, were arrested and exterminated. 2. In 1929, the former Soviet Union established gun control as a means of controlling the “more difficult” of their citizens. From 1929 to the death of Stalin, 40 million Soviets met an untimely end at the hand of various governmental agencies as they were arrested and exterminated.
3. After the rise of the Nazi’s, Germany established their version of gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, 13 million Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, the mentally ill, and others, who were unable to defend themselves against the “Brown Shirts”, were arrested and exterminated. Interestingly, the Brown Shirts were eventually targeted for extermination themselves following their blind acts of allegiance to Hitler. Any American military and police would be wise to grasp the historical significance of the Brown Shirts’ fate.
4. After Communist China established gun control in 1935, an estimated 50 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves against their fascist leaders, were arrested and exterminated.
5. Closer to home, Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayans, unable to defend themselves against their ruthless dictatorship, were arrested and exterminated.
6. Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves from their dictatorial government, were arrested and exterminated.
[IMG]7. Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million of the “educated” people, unable to defend themselves against their fascist government, were arrested and exterminated.
8. In 1994, Rwanda disarmed the Tutsi people and being unable to defend themselves from their totalitarian government, nearly one million were summarily executed.
The total numbers of victims who lost their lives because of gun control is approximately 70 million people in the 20th century. The historical voices from 70 million corpses speak loudly and clearly to those Americans who are advocating for a de facto gun ban. Governments murdered four times as many civilians as were killed in all the international and domestic wars combined. Governments murdered millions more people than were killed by common criminals and it all followed gun control.

Gun Rights vs. Gun Confiscation: You Decide! Gun Rights
Do you know where the world's most heavily armed population resides? No, it's not the United States, but Switzerland. In Switzerland there is also a thriving gun culture (shooting contests for children ages 12 to 16 are quite popular) and one of the world's lowest crime rates. There are firearms in every household, and the heads of households are trained on how to use them. In 1997, Switzerland had 1.2 murders per 100,000 - about the same as Great Britain, which is often touted as a gun-control success story. Since this fact disproves their theory that guns cause crime, the gun control movement typically does not address it.

Gun Confiscation
On the other side of the coin, we have Australia. Throughtout history, Australia has really never had a major problem with violent crime even though gun ownership is commonplace. Until April 28th 1996, when a lunatic shot 35 people in Port Arthur. An anti-gun uproar appeared immediately (even though guns have never been a problem in the past) and a law was passed making it a felony to possess semi-automatic firearms, even those used for hunting. The government confiscated these firearms from law abiding citizens, and these guns (in some cases rare collectibles) were destroyed. Gun Control and left-wing politicians said great things about the new law and anticipated a drop in crime.
As common sense would dictate, just the opposite occurred. In 1997, (12 months after the new laws went into effect) homicides jumped 3.2 percent, armed robberies were up a whopping 44 percent, assaults up 8.6 and there was a 300% increase in homicides in the state of Victoria. Prior to the new anti-gun laws, statistics showed a steady decrease in armed robberies with firearms; now, there has been a dramatic increase in break-ins, especially against the elderly.
In 1998, in the state of South Australia, robbery with a firearm increased nearly 60 percent. In 1999, new figures
reveal that the assault rates in the state of NSW has risen almost 20 percent. In fact, Great Britian has surpassed America in its overall rate of violent crime (per 100,000 residents). I'm not going to beat a dead horse here and explain why this happened, but you can put two and two together and figure it out. Hint: You can bet the armed criminals did not turn in their weapons...
I don't claim to be a genius, but it really doesn't require a genius to conclude that Gun Control is one of the top three scams of all time, the other two being multi-level marketing and Tae Bo.

Crime rates seem to be more directly related to income and poverty levels in any given country rather than the strictness or looseness of gun laws.

People who are hungry are desperate. Desperate people commit crimes.

Anyone read or see Les Miserables?
Case in point.

Yeah but in an armed society, a desperate person will think twice before inflicting harm on others for selfish gains.

Gun control isn't about public safety. It never has been. It's about disarming opposition.

It's cool. Well, I wasn't trying to say all violent criminals use a firearm. But I was trying to say that most gun violence isn't people like Adam Lanza- most of it is things like gang violence and other violence due to situations- poverty, etc and a better way then taking everyone's guns to solve all that would be to try to fix society... good luck w that though too. Not sure where you'd start...

From http://thefreedictionary.com:

'Desperate' and 'selfish' seem more like opposites to me than meaning the same thing in the sense that you used them.

If someone is desperate, is it fair to say they are selfish in wanting to have what they need? Especially if it is necessary for survival? Our survival instinct is hard to tamp down.
'Selfish gains' is a term more akin to greed which is wanting more than one needs.

A desperate person is just in dire need of what they need.

Betcha that those weapons are all illegal anyway, So its not a question of law, its a question of enforcement.

Trying to dissarm criminals with gun laws won't work because part of being a criminal is not following the law. Therefore it is a better to arm those who need defense instead of leaving them even more helpless. But the dissarming the opposition statement does make sense if the innocent citizen is the opposition and the government is the is the one disarming them.

Trying to disarm law abiding citizens is just a right wing lie. Taking assault weapons out of the hands of these nut job fanatics is the objective. Like the fukwit in Santa Monica yesterday that had 1,300 bullets for his .223 Bushman. Only killed 5, before the cops killed him. Every one of these assault weapon murders, are the NRA's fault for overturning the ban on them. The NRA isn't defending your rights, they're killing innocent people. Nobody defends themselves with an assault weapon. They only kill lots of innocent people. Just try to come up with one instance where an assault weapon was used to defend someone's home.

End poverty.
End hunger.
Create equal opportunity.

you know that it is statistically difficult to get accurate numbers of how often someone defends themselves with a firearm, assault weapon or not, because the majority of the time there is no report filed or call to the police made.
Add to that the fact that the media doesn't make $$$$$$ reporting on an absence of crime, but sure as hell jump on every dime that can be squeezed out of even the slightest mishap or crime.

Oh, for the record, my friend out camping with his wife defended themselves from a group of drunken assholes, with his pre-ban AR15.
But of course because they turned tail and ran without any shots being fired, no news copter's with reporters ever showed up shoving microphones in his face, so I guess you'll just have to take my word for it.

He called the rangers, but they didn't even come to his campsite to talk to him.

Not to mention the fact that by reporting the prevented crime you could be charged with possession of an illegal weapon or some other charge you may not be aware of.

Of course not...there are no 'only's in reality. Not usually, anyway.

But it would go a long way toward decreasing violent crime in the US.
