Guardians of the Galaxy Movie Blurb by Shale August 3, 2014 (Repost - Original Got Lost in the Changeover) This is a Marvel Comic made into a movie and I have never heard of it. (My comics were Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman – all the others happened after I quit reading commix – except for Zap in the ‘70s). Apparently the comics have also been around for a while and there is probably a BIG fanbase. I could say that is why it was liked by 92% of the aggregate critics on Rottentomatoes and by 96% of audiences but I was part of that audience and liked it because it is a fun movie. There is the usual absurd action scenes, but also the novel dialogue as Peter Quill AKA Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) a terran uses expression from late 1980s earth that have no meaning to many of the alien races with whom he associates out in the galaxy. He was taken as a child and raised by a group of space pirates called Ravagers. His only possession is his coveted Walkman with a mix tape of his mother’s favorite ‘70s songs – which also brings a fresh feel to the soundtrack. The Ravagers train him well and he has stolen a mysterious orb that will fetch a good price. Peter Quill But, just as Indiana Jones always discovered, looting is not so easy. There is a megalomaniac named Ronan (Lee Pace) who wants the power of this orb to destroy a planet. He sends his assassin Gamora (Zoey Saldana) to retrieve it from Quill. Gamora At the same time, Quill’s boss whom he double crossed sends his own bounty hunters to bring Quill back so he may kill him. Rocket, a genetically altered, very smart, talking raccoon and Groot a humanoid, walking tree. (OK, it sounds weird in script but you had to have been there, it works). They all meet with their disparate agendas on the planet Xanda and the orb changes hands several times before the Nova Corps cops nab the whole lot and throw them in the slammer. There, imprisoned together, they get to know each other and decide to work together. They pick up another member of their team, Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) and plan an escape to get the orb to a high paying fence. They all go thru their adventures together for whatever personal reasons but eventually become a real team, the Guardians of the Galaxy. (sequel coming up in 3 years). Guardians of the Galaxy I really enjoyed this movie, which was action and explosions and mayhem but also light and had some funny gags. Sort of a feel-good movie by the end. Think of Galaxy Quest with more special effects and action.
Great review, I was deciding whether to go and see this. Like you I've always been a comic book fan but never really encountered the Guardians, for that reason I was undecided. You're review helped so I'll go off to see it next week before the showing finishes at my local. Sx
Oh, the other day I was thinking if I should watch this movie, and after reading this I think I'll check it out. I'll let you know what I think about it Mosho
