Some of the Grunge bands I like: Alice In Chains Pearl Jam Nirvana Soundgarden Colective Soul Stone Temple Pilots Soul Asylum Even the later Days Of The New are pretty good.
i really need to get listening to alice in chains. not heard collective soul or soul asylum, names sound fumiliar though i don't think mother love bone were that good, everyone says that they were on the way of becoming the biggest grunge band ever but the singer died.....
I agree with Rayni, the bands that were mentioned I really like a lot. I'd also like to add Temple of the Dog, Mother Love Bone, Audioslave & Velvet Revolver too.
man, Kyuss IS desert rock, they started it all!! well, was was desert rock, anyway. before they split. then you got Mondo Generator n Queens of the Stone age... yeh man! i prefer grunge to symphonic metal anyday. Jaz
yep, Mondo Generator rocks... I think they are comparable to QOTSA. I am also a big fan of Nebula though. they are truly a band that epitomizes heavy psychedelia...
Well, then if Kyuss qualifies as desert rock, then desert rock is one of my favorites. Kyuss is unbelievable in the music they create. They are incredible. John Garcia also did a side project called Slo-Burn, which I never found much from. QOTSA just isnt the same without him.
If you are looking for some more Grunge or Grunge LikeCheck out these bands The ones in red are also favorites of mine: Beck Better Than Ezra Blur Bush Kate Bush Counting Crows Faith No More Filter Foo Fighters Garbage Hole Hoobastank Hootie and the Blowfish Jane's Addiction Jesus & Mary Chain Live New Found Glory Nine Inch Nails R.E.M. Silverchair The Smashing Pumpkins Smash Mouth Sonic Youth Sublime The Verve Pipe Weezer
i must agree with the bands, although i've had a very brief listen to TOTD but i'm not sure i'd calle velvet revolver and audioslave grunge. although they are both amazing bands
I would have to say all the grunge bands that have been mention so far are great. But there is one that is above the rest...Pearl Jam!!! They rock!!!
dunno probably because i see nightwish and within temptation quite different to eg cradle of filth but all 3 get called goth metal bands not that i don't like the music cradle does, i just don't listen to it
Hmm... Well, Cradle of Filth is symphonic metal too... very different from Nightwish, certainly, but still relying heavily on orchestral arrangements, and therefore, symphonic. I think it's actually quite impossible to use "symphonic metal" as a genre of music because of the enormous differences between bands that can be qualified as "symphonic metal" bands. For example, both Blind Guardian and Emperor could be put into this genre, while Blind Guardian is power metal and Emperor is black metal, and their music is very, very different, even though they both use a lot of samples and keyboards that represent violins and choirs. So when speaking of symphonic metal, I always assume you're talking about all bands using more than the average of classical music in their songs. Not just the female-fronted "fantasy metal" you seemed to specify. Symphonic metal encompasses much, much more than that. And what I meant with my question is not why you called it "symphonic metal" instead of gothic metal ( again: a lot of symphonic bands aren't anywhere near gothic metal ), but I was wondering why you compared grunge to just symphonic metal instead of metal in general. It's not a very important question, I'm just curious. For Within Temptation etcetera, I think fantasy metal will do for the moment. "Power metal characterised by female vocals, though sounding slightly more mystic" is such a mouthfull, isn't it? But if you've got a better idea, don't hesitate to tell us. Be creative. ( Note: "symphonic metal" ( with quotation signs ) is used for the non-existent genre, without quotation signs is used to represent all bands that could be categorised as such ) Queens of the Stone Age is nice too, by the way. Found it under stoner rock. I'm not much for genres outside metal ( I'm a bit of an elitist when it comes to metal, as you might have noticed ), but yeah, "desert rock" fits the sound, I think.
whoa dude you could have just said "it has more divisions" i'm not comparing them at all, they just happen to be the two genres i like the most at the moment
Blind Melon's stuff is damn good... I like their lighter stuff like No Rain, Change, and their cover of The Pusher.
Grunge is great (even though its kind of dead now) and symphonic rock just gets on my nerves..im not quite sure why, but it just annoys me. I LOVE Soungarden, Alice in Chains, and Nirvana.
Yeah, I guess, but that wouldn't make me sound like an elitist enough. Ah, okay. Try a few of the bands I mentioned. They're a bit harsher than Within Temptation though.
It's not really dead. It just went back to what it was before. Underground and only played in the proper "dives" and clubs. Grunge was never ment for the mainstream.
