However, this is a good example of why Big Data is so important. Like assembling a puzzle, the more pieces you have the clearer the picture becomes and new insights become inevitable. In this case, studying data on evolution they discovered that how fast an organism can grow limits its metabolic rate, which is the opposite of what everyone has assumed forever. My own view, is it reflects the symmetry of existence, which can be compared to Boyle's Law and a Goldilocks Principle of Murphy's Law. The faster a container can grow, the faster its metabolism can work and maintain some sort of ideal temperature range of "just right" for the organism to thrive and survive. I'll have to think about it some more but, as usual, I always find what I need when I need it. Applying the same principle to information itself, we can only gather information at a speed that is compatible with maintaining our body temperature. In semiconductors, its been known for some time that our current technology is way too inefficient for next generation supercomputers to work without melting. They require a lower "metabolism" that is compatible with the shrinking sizes of the features on the chips themselves. Theoretically, there should also be an ideal size depending on the materials used, which can exploit quantum effects such as superconductivity that don't generate heat at all.
