Greener future - environmental stewardship - economic sustainability

You see, it is necessary to pursue all three simultaneously. Why, you wonder? Because the lack of any one of the three will mean future disaster.

And this is why smart people lend no credence to people spouting we must do one or two at the other's expense.

Even if you disagree with her voice, you can’t deny her passion. What are you that passionate about, that you would alter your life to try to bring to others attention?
Thank about it, or mouth off to me angrily

Want to help save the world from climate change? Then grab some seeds, or some seedlings, and start planting trees like there's no tomorrow.

At least 1 trillion of them, and fast.

That may sound like a lot of trees, but the Earth has room for their gnarled bows and branches. In a new study that excluded cities and agricultural areas, researchers found that the planet has nearly 3.5 million square miles (9 million square kilometers) to spare for trees. Such newly planted trees could cut carbon (a part of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide) in the atmosphere by nearly 25%, bringing it down to levels not seen for nearly 100 years, the scientists said.

Deforestation Adds More Atmospheric CO2 than the Sum Total of Cars & Trucks on the World's Roads...
Deforestation in tropical rainforests adds more carbon dioxide to the Earth’s atmosphere than the sum total of cars and trucks on the world’s roads. Cars and trucks account for 14% of global carbon emissions, while most analysts attribute 15% to deforestation. One of the reasons why logging is bad for the climate is that when the trees are felled, they release the carbon that they are storing into the …

I get so tired of hearing about windmills and green energy when deforestation is the main cause of climate change.

We need all of it, forestation, green energy, and a revolution in energy use. Back in the late 1960’s I ran the tree planting program on a National Forest in WI; each year we planted about 100k trees...big dudes now!

What ticks me off about forestation is when they come in and harvest a stand of magnificent hardwoods then plant a bunch of pines where they stood and sell it off as "reforestation" (sometimes too closely together to boot). Like most things, public's like "oh nice". :-/

I think it's super cynical to spout about Greta being a scam and really pessimistic to suggest that science is a sham.

It's so obvious to me, but some people I think are into their pickup, or like to steam up and take a 40 minute shower. They aren't going to change, and so they're lying -- saying that it's all bogus because they don't wanna admit that they're doing it wrong.

Actually the district I worked on had some of finest Northern Hardwoods in the U S and they were managed as such. Our reforestation projects were on sod and brush choked sites that were nor regenerating naturally to any tree species. Spacing allowed for future thinning as part of the management of that stand.

That's great, but I've seen hundreds of stands of white pine on ground native hardwood was harvested from. It disgusts me that they pass that off as reforesting.

The reason Greta is such a right wing boogyman is the heart of her argument is that the Earth belongs to everyone. Going beyond the free market you have to worry about more than money and accept a resource is not infinite. The capitalist says there is always more. No matter what the earth will give you more and profits can and will be higher. It's been mixed with the Christian faith. They will say it's blasphemy from Satan to say man can do anything to the Earth. God made it and only he can change it. So all one can do is be like supply side Jesus and use the Earth.

Americans elites want to own water and the sun. The idea that nature gives something without profit is unacceptable. The father you go with global warming polices the quicker you tell the elites that human rights exist with some resources. The idea of saving a planet for people not born is wrong to them. They need to make their own way in life. How unfair to stop MY profits for the unborn. Capitalism is very short sighted in this way.

When Mr. Burns on the Simpsons blocked the sun it was a joke but the bigger things like solar power get the more the 1% will want to do just that.

The Simpsons often make observations that can be quite simple and subtle, but also strike accrately the heart at things

To the genius who started this thread - I wouldn't have done it with your grammar and vocabulary. To all the haters who blamed Greta for being greedy and seeking fame: shame on you. If you are as deaf as not to hear the voice of a child speaking the truth, then there is no hope for you. Just stop polluting us with your toxic thoughts. Greta Thunberg gives €1m award money to climate groups

Somebody's gotta point it out. Why don't you pick up a freakin' Bible and gain some wisdom before spewing that disgusting brown stuff out your backside? Before that, stay out of other people's back yards. That sounds like dementia patient trying to make sense of things. Words cobbled together fighting for an interpretation. From a negative and spiteful perspective. One which is devoid of understanding. I'm sure somebody along the line told you to mind your studies, do well, and stay out of trouble. How is it other people's faults that you didn't take heed and chose to goof off for fun instead?

Wisdom from the bible? What in the bible will stop greedy capitalists from using more and more of the earths resources until approaching near depletion ? Because we humans have been taught to need--need -need the shiny objects industry continually and so conveniently provides, any concern about the earth in the present, in twenty years, in a hundred years , in a thousand years ,means nothing to the very humans that actually --have the power to make the needed changes to avoid catastrophe and chaos. How is the bible or any other source of information going to change the situation in which we now find the state of humanity and those greed heads that are leading the headlong charge into oblivion? By appealing to the consciences of said greed heads? Have a laugh! By appealing to ordinary citizens? Pfft! Too many deniers. As I've quoted THX-1138 before----------don't forget to -------BUY MORE. Isaac Newton, (born December 25, 1642 [January 4, 1643, New Style], Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire, England—died March 20 [March 31], 1727 once proclaimed "For every action there is a reaction" or words to that effect.

Hands up anyone who truly believes that Mr. Elon Musk (nett worth approximately $83 billion} really gives a flying fuck about the environment? While conventional cars contain roughly 20 to 50 pounds of copper, a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) typically contains 85 pounds of copper; a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) uses about 130 pounds of copper; and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) typically contain more than 180 pounds of copper. Cool you say?

The Chilian open pit copper mines located in the Atacama Desert, rank as the third deepest open-pit operations in the world. Escondida copper mining operation consists of two open-pit mines, namely Escondida pit and Escondida Norte pit. The Escondida pit is 3.9km long, 2.7km wide and 645m deep. The Escondida Norte pit is 525m deep. Most of this copper is used for the manufacture of electric cars. Soon these mines will stop producing copper. Will the landscape then be returned to what it was before mining began?

Generators use 1,900 pounds of copper in the 1.5MW Wind Turbine. The shaft from the wind-driven blades is connected to the nacel-located generator, and drives the generator to produce electricity. And all this to reduce the carbon footprint.

Since day one of planet earth 700 million metric tons of copper have been produced. This amount will be surpassed within thirty years to be gobbled up by so called "green energy" production. So what? You say. Go Google what effect open pit mining has had on the environment in Chile not to mention China. Massive dams of black water containing heavy metals including Mercury are destroying the environment in these countries.

Please ask Ms Thunberg what she thinks of this.
