Excellent point. If any of the other worlds in the Solar System have life, even if it's only microbes, then we should leave that planet or moon alone.

Using a fly car or taxi, you could probably cut that down to 10 minutes.

  3. And meanwhile you gorge yourself on the life of this Earth. But God forbid we touch the microbes of Mercury.

But see, you're thinking within the confines of the system you already have there.
The US needs a better train system. San Diego (isnt that where you are) could have an underground or a light rail system. And a high speed train from San Diego all the way to Seattle, why doesnt that exist? It's silly the US doesnt have a comprehensive network of high speed trains already. China is way ahead of us on that.
And I'll use my own city too because I've thought about it a bit....we could have light rail that goes from the city out to the suburbs, following the busiest traffic corridors in all directions. And then buses could deliver people from the light rail stops to a bus stop closer to their home. And then a high speed rail from Atlanta through my city to Charlotte (that stretch has been in talks for years but shows no sign of actually happening) to DC and up to New York. Its senseless that we dont have that already.
And I know people laugh at Elon Musk, although I dont think you're one who laughs...but anyways he's doing interesting things with the Boring Company. Which is exactly what I mean, we need more people with Musk's imagination. We need more people willing to invest in those who have imagination because not everyone gets rich off paypal and can invest in themselves lol

    Unintended consequences
Just like our eating habits on earth have had really bad unintended consequences

  6. Which we're doing nothing to change, and people scoff at anyone who tries. Just don't tell me you're desperate to protect whatever life exists in this solar system, please.

Some people are doing things to change and some people arent scoffing. So

  8. The vast majority aren't, and the vast majority are, so buttons.

Swapping a high speed light rail for the slow amtrak we currently have would be cool but I'm not sure how significant a difference that would make on the pollution front.

So this was a real pic I guess in response to Gretta.

These are the people you are trying to reason with... Let that sink in.

Its fine where I live, a bus every which way every couple minutes, train into the city every 5 minutes

And since the days of smartphones I dont see the big deal about waiting 10 minutes.

    Certainly a lot less stressful

Public transport is fantastic, provided you can find a seat that somebody hasn't throw up in or pissed all over.

LOL no, German public transport is great, but I agree with GB although in reality, I don't think that our personal creature comforts should be taken in any consideration when defining a law that is proven to benefit the world we live in significantly. But I kinda hope we do this before I can't drive my truck anymore lol. If we can just hang on until I die, then you can start banning stuff. :D I'm to used to my freedom!

If we do ban motor vehicles fuck, I'll sign up as a bus driver or a taxi driver just so I can drive and do shit still in my bus.

If ones freedoms cause a cascade of negative consequences for others, it’s not freedom...it’s called selfishness and greed. Of which DT is a case in point.

I think that is lost on the modern American. Freedom means I can do whatever I want when I want. For example I have heard these people say global warming means they can't water their lawn so it infringes on their rights as home owners. They don't see water shortages as a bigger issue it's only them.

  15. More trains means less gas consumption, means oil companies make less money, means no trains in the USA. If we had anything motivating us besides greed and money, it'd have happened fifty years ago.

Never had a car in my life.
    It's really not that bad.

Oh yeah, great idea, let them evolve into a threat. Don't be silly! Best get them now a few billion years before they can cause us trouble.

You know I wasn't arguing for putting our garbage in space, right? So why put it like that?

For the record I don't at all advocate treating the rest of the solar system the way we are treating Earth. I want to start treating the whole place as our home, and hope that if we spread out a bit it would take the pressure off our resources etc and give us time to evolve mentally a bit more.

One thing I'd also like to see is let's start making all the things we don't want to give up so well that they LAST. Mobile phones, laptops.. End the need for consumer culture and we wouldn't need new versions every year. People always act like you have to give all the stuff we've created up if you believe in looking after the planet and I don't think that's true.

I think its taught that's a prerequisite for the possibility of life. It doesn't mean there is any life.
Who has been arguing that? Not me, that's for sure. If you think otherwise, read better.

Actually, that was my point. Her point is that arguing for exploiting other planets is hypocritical when there's some life on there. But who was arguing for that?
