Greece's woes. An article in The Guardian claims that defence spending is to blame for their debt. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/belief/2015/jul/03/throughout-history-debt-and-war-have-been-constant-partners?CMP=soc_567 I just wonder what Greece's form of income comes from apart from tourism and the Australian pension. The only thing I know they export is ouzo.
I read the same thing too. They said the biggest factor in Germany being where it is today was a total reduction on military requirements. Who's Greece have as enemies anyway? They recently tried to get us to pay them a lot of money for post war reparations. I'm glad or government told 'em to sod off.
We are in this shit because Greece is corrupt as all hell, and the rest of europe has been propping them up for a decade
And with the complexity of financial markets nowadays, derivatives and the what not, impossible for a country or another countrys governement to make a dent in one economy in the shorterm Venezuala this year, with the oil price drop, once their dollar started to fluctuate wildly, the amount of funds coming in from the rest of the world to basically gamble on their currency far outweighed that countries total assets Same with greece now, shitload more money being gambled on their markets than their banks dont have left
Liking your own post eh I guess their enemy is Turkey? Plus they have problems with a huge flow of illegal immigrants, coming from Turkey (or better said Syria). On a related note, Hungary is building a wall at their eastern border (with Serbia), and I totally support this, even if it redirects immigrants to Croatia. Anyways, I doubt this is going to end well for Greece. They want to negotiate, but under their own conditions. Sigh. Such dra(h) ma.
And debt relief is pretty much the same thing.as.austerity You are just sayng, continue your bullshit corruption, keep spending a bunch of money on stuff that doesnt do anything. The general public will have to come at all levels of government, past and present, with pitchforks before there is real change. That is revolution, change the culture before there is real change Whats greek for viva la revolu-chee-on? Mousaka rhe revolu-cha-on vre
Greece has compulsory service, for 2 years I think. Many Greeks delay this as long as possible because military pay is terrible and it's almost impossible to retain any control of a job or business. So going into the military is essentially a trip to bankruptcy fort most. The government props this up with minimal safety nets. I used to work with a Greek guy when I was a corporate whore working in IT. He was hired in because he had superb negotiating skills. I went to several meetings where I got to see this in action. If I ever buy anything big, like a ranch, I'm going to have him negotiate the deal. Also, there was nothing sedentary about him, he was a dynamo who worked 15 hour days because he called every time zone in the US. He also dug up dirt on everyone. Even me!
What does Greece have to show for all of the excessive "military spending", like any military assets? Show me the aircraft carrier. They are purchasing the votes of the citizen via distribution of benefits and pensions on borrowed cash.
One of their ships was originally an American ship, the USS Slater. I forget the name the Greeks gave it after purchasing it as WW2 surplus. But after many years in service the Greeks retired it and sold it back to a group in Albany who has been restoring it for quite a while now. I took a tour of it back in the late 90s.
