I think I see it in the first couple of albums and the fact that they love early british black metal stuff. But I'm not really big on the old black metal scene so I don't really know.

Back in those days there wasn't such a strict divide between black, thrash and death metal. These terms were thrown around rather haphazardly and only in the course of time would all gain a very specific set of features associated with it. Now if you tried to categorise Burzum as death metal you'd be very wrong, while in the early and mid-80s there just wasn't so much difference between the genres yet. IMO.

Of course I might be biased because I love 90s metal much more than 80s metal...

That's true, Led Zeppelin would by today's standards be more classified as Classical Rock, or better put 70s Rock, most 80s Rock today would be best classified as Hard Rock, and so on.

But I really think Justice cuts away from that Thrash Metal Metallica was known for in their Kill Em and Lightning albums.

That's true.. I guess if Kill 'Em All is one of the first thrash metal albums (which it definitely is), And Justice For All isn't 'pure' thrash metal.. it's a more evolved, more complex form of thrash metal.. but yea not pure, hardcore thrash like Kill 'Em All and RTL.

As for Slayer.. I do consider them a thrash metal band. See you can't use Kill 'Em All to define thrash... if that was the case, then Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightning are the only thrash metal albums. But they're not. Slayer's was a different form of thrash metal.. greatly influenced by a sound that would later be defined as death metal. So yes, today I guess it would be correct to label Slayer a thrash/death metal band.

Slayer influenced just about every metal band that had yet to come.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Testament's first couple of albums. Good stuff.

...Ill give you five essential thrash albums...no paticular order...

Testament - Practice what you preach (How can you deny Chuck Billy and Alex Skolnick)
Exodus - Bonded by Blood (One of the leaders of thrash)
Slayer - Hell Awaits (The Gods themselves)
Megadeth - Rust in peace (One of the best thrash albums by one of the best thrash bands)
Anthrax - Among the Living (Scott Ian is one of the best)

Personally, I like Fistful of Metal better than Among the Living. I don't like how scott ian has taken up doing reality shows though. First supergroup, now rock and roll fantasy camp..

    Thats true, he's wicked.

I don't blame him for doing supergroup though, he's often listed the nuge' as an idol and now he's hanging with him, kudos to "supergroup" in that aspect.

However, when he shows up on survivor or something..... ...

I can't pick just one, so you get my two favorites:

    Kreator -- 'Pleasure To Kill.'

    Razor -- 'Violent Restitution.'

Well....since I've only really known 3 of the "big four," more than any other thrash bands, I'm going with Metallica's - Master of Puppets.

Now as far as pure "talent," and "sound," I think Slayer kills them all.
