That is simple. It's narrowed down to a few.

    Bohemian Rhapsody- Queen
    Stairway to Heaven- Led Zeppelin
    American Pie- Don McLean
    Free Bird- Lynyrd Skynyrd
    Carry On Wayward Son- Kansas
    Satisfaction- The Rolling Stones
    Imagine- John Lennon

opinions and .....well you know the rest i would never even atempt to say this 5 are the greatest of anything = is foolish . theres was just plain to many great songs in the 60s and 70s to come to this conclusion.

Songs are used like a life time recording point . 1 song might remind you of who you were and what you were doing at that specific time frame ... a girlfriend , boyfriend, a party ,a event, a death. a lost friend or friends . world events etc. if this peculiar song reminds you of a special moment then it far outweights the quality of the song material. this well work with any gender of music . if some kid came to me and said this rap song reminds me when i was 16 in 1992 i would have too take the poison pill and say "right kid that songs was good" . why becouse i know what it means to him . "is not the kid foult for music he was around in" but you must respect his space . that same goes for country music,Jazz, etc, etc, for the 60s and 70s is far more dificult becouse there was so much good talent back then. But the music itself records your important events of your life time . we dont have a time machine to go back in time but past music is the closest to it.

Oh, what you do to me, oh, what you do to me, little girl.
Ooo, have another hit of sweet air, come on, ooo, have another hit.
I want to know where you're going,
I want to know, sweet mama, where you're gonna go, yeah.
Ooo, have another hit of fresh air, ooo, have another hit.
Oh, baby, what you gonna do, oh, honey, what you gonna do, sweet thing?
Ooo, have another hit of sweet love, ooo, have another hit.
I love you, yes I do, babe, and I love you, I do, sweet lips.
Ooo, have another hit of sweet California sunshine, ooo, have another hit.
Take me home, take me home, take me home with you,
Take me home, I wanna go home with you, little girl.
Ooo, have another hit of fresh air, ooo, have another hit.

although this is indeed the hardest question to answer ever...

i'm gonna have to say either nights in white satin or hendrix's cover of watchtower. stairway's great too, but probably very obvious.

I'd say something by Roy Orbison, like Go go go or Oobie dooby.

All Along the Watchtower by Hendrix is probably the greatest rock n' roll song of all time. I'd have to say that that's the definitive rock n' roll song.

However, my favorite song is Achilles Last Stand. Floyd's Time comes close, but neither of them are the greatest rock song of all time, just favorite tunes.

There are so many different eras of rock and roll! I think we should be required to name at least thirty for each era.

Yes, this kid knows music! For me, The Doors are the epitomization of all that is rock n roll.

'Trash' by the New York Dolls. It has it all! An Eddie Cochran riff from the dawn of RnR, that girl group sassy 'call', fast pounding rhythm of punk yet to come, lyrics ripped straight from Mickey and Sylvia's 'Love is Strange' for the climax, and even that stop/start thing that Nirvana mastered.
