I woke up this morning realizing what the greatest invention of all time is, or was, as the case may be. The chair. I know, I know, fire is the most often cited greatest invention, or at least discovery of mankind, but I beg to differ. I say the chair. Bear with me. First of all, everybody has fire. Even the most primitive of primitive societies, and where did it get most of them? Nowhere. Ninety percent of the primitive civilizations are gone. At least ninety percent, by my reckoning. But how about those that used the chair? Only highly developed civilizations used them, the earliest examples date back to about 2680 B.C. and were used by Egyptian priests and rulers. Very exclusive. Mind you I'm talking about chairs with backs, not stools, which were much more common. An Egyptian chair. Now I know the ancient Egyptians are also gone along with ninety percent of the losers, but at least they built the pyramids. Form there the chair traveled to the Greeks and Romans and down through history to Ben Franklin who, it is said, invented the rocking chair, the first major step in chair design since its inception. And what have we now? Consider, the chair has evolved tremendously since the industrial revolution. Remember the Romans stood in their chariots! How stupid! It wasn't for some time that mankind realized he could actually sit while riding along in his chariot or wagon. So now my main argument. I will make my point by illustrating with illustrations the evolution of the chair and how it has transformed mankind for ever and ever...more than fire even. Consider (in no particular order): We have added wheels to chairs for transportation and sport. Sanitation: Motorized it: And so on, I'm tired looking up pictures. But I'll end with two examples to solidify my case and quiet all you nay sayers. We have used chairs to travel to the moon, without which it would have been impossible to do as that's along time to stand up, or lay down for that matter: And my final argument: Chairs for everything modern man could need!
The chair is a pretty good candidate based on your points. I would say the written record (in any and all forms) is another good candidate. There never would have been the organization needed to maintain large groups of homo sapiens without having a means of recording all sorts of things.
Anesthetics Prior to anesthetics, a doctor would hand a patient a wooden stick and say, "Here, bite down on this while I cut you open." I've had minor and major surgeries in my life. The pain that I would've had to endure without anesthetics on those parts of my body... My god... I can't imagine
Probably speakers and or music. I mean if I think about chairs and cars and shit, if I had to live without that, I think I'd go nuts without music. I'll ride a horse and I'll sit on a haystack, but I want to listen to music.
i like chairs. i suspect i spend too much of my life sitting in them to be good for my health. most of the things i enjoy in life do depend on them. of two types specifically, one i can sit in front of my computer on, and the seating on public transportation. the rest of my life consists of walking from one to another, or stretched out horizontal in a state of suspended awareness. flat rocks found in nature are perfectly suitable for sitting on however, for not overly extended periods, but sufficiently long for other creatures to realize you are not an eminent threat of attack upon them. it is also possible to sketch or photograph from such a position. yes the chair is nice, but i can think of several other things, toilet paper for one, and the cat box, or in other words, designated places to defficate, to avoid creating health hazards by not limiting doing so to such places. to varying degrees, all forms of energy and propulsion not requiring human exertion, nor that of other living creatures. (though there are distinct problems with the use of combustion for this purpose when combined with the excessive population of a sapient species such as our own) sources of light enabling creative endeavors to not be limited to times of natural sources being available.
Home Comforts Standing there at the table Looking out the window Bare legs on show. I rest my hands on your shoulders Enjoying the view, My hands explore the curvature of your body. I think of our time together You've supported me through thick and thin Your arms resting my head as I sleep. Life together has not always been easy we've had our differences I've cursed you, when you've stood on my toe, You've tripped and kicked me in the shins, At times you can be hard and uncomfortable But I keep returning to you. You groan as I pull you back I lift you up and twirl you around So I can sit down. Jammy110
Sitting too much has led to sedentary lifestyles and an obesity epidemic. Giant thumbs down for the chair
That's why I chill responsibly by laying on a couch. There's also the option to not put everything in reach so you get up like once every half hour at least Seriously folks! Couch > chair
I always gotta give it up to the brave men and women who have came before us and tried various spices and herbs for the first time, not knowing if they were poisonous or not. Humanity salutes you, early foodies
