Gravity... Gravity... is working against me, And gravity wants to bring me down! Oh, I'll never known what makes this man, With all the love that his heart can stand, Dream of ways... to throw it all away... Whoa, gravity is working against me, And gravity wants to bring me down. Oh, twice as much ain't twice as good, And can't sustain like one half could! It's wanting more... That's gonna send me to my knees! Oh twice as much ain't twice as good, And can't sustain like one half could! It's wanting more... That's gonna send me to my knees! Whoa, gravity, stay the hell away from me! Whoa, gravity has taken better men than me! Now how can that be? Just keep me where the light is! Just keep me where the light is! Just keep me where the light is! Come on keep me where the light is! Come on keep me where, keep me where the light is! (John Mayer)
This is yet another song I didn't have to change a single word in to get it to work. Gravity is one of the major themes in my poetry and this illustrates how gravity is synonymous with uncontrollable desire. Many of our poems contain references to AA and NA literature. Being able to make such a clear and direct statement and link it to the rest of the poetry is a big plus, and I could never write anything more direct and too the point than John Mayer has here. The idea of denying our own desires is somewhat controversial in western culture which values ego more, and this conveys the central message with as little controversy as possible, that your ego can become counterproductive and you have to know when to laugh at yourself or get on your knees.
