All I've found is a couple 2 or 3 minute Youtube videos and it just sounded like blues. Is there more than that? Was any of it really psychedelic?
Well, the whole electric blues thing was big, and Pigpen was a huge fan. But the jams were where the psychedelia began. As the band grew, so did the psychedelia.
Blues turned into improvised blues, psychedellics were abundant, the blues turned into sonic exploration. Most of the most famous psychedellic bands of the era started off in blues.

I just listened to snippets of it but yah seems primarily bluesy, maybe psychedelic in the sense that they jam for a while. The 2nd video sounds more psychedelic oriented and like some of the other live Grateful Dead I've heard. Some of the spoken word passages are pretty spaced out on here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VF1eVtaoks"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VF1eVtaoks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Do14BKeW2L8"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Do14BKeW2L8
I have the recordings of the Warlocks at most of the acid tests. One psychedelic tune they played a lot was Caution. I can look up some of the playlists, if you want.
It was blues with so much improving and jamming it was more like a primitive form of modern acid rock. Listen to a full concert.
Are you really asking if Pigpen blues from 66 is psychedelic? Take a listen to them doing the Same Thing, King Bee or Viola Lee Blues and you'll change your mind. :2thumbsup:
Well, not exactly. You must see the Sunshine Daydream video of the famous 8/27/72 concert at the Creamery in Kesey's backyard. That was pretty close to an acid test. Everyone was dosed and the Pranksters were there.
Correct although what was represented in the film was pretty much how shows were then based on the old heads I know. At least the ones that occurred outside. When I started going to shows in the late 80's (summer tour) there were folks walking around and "puddling" pretty much anyone who asked.
