I have no respect for the Grammys. The Grateful Dead never won a Grammy even tho they were wildly popular for 30 years. Hip Hop artists who seem to have no talent win often. The Grammys are unlike other award shows, like the Golden Globes. For the GG, I think that real people are judging the talent, but for the Grammys it seems that the only thing that matters is the Almighty Dollar. I am rooting for Lorde, however. What do you think of this year's show, which is beginning in 30 minutes?
I don't mind the Grammys some years, I kind of take it for what it is. Also about the Grateful Dead...
Not really, I'm not even sure they had a Number 1 single or album in the US. I generally hear them regarded more as a live act.
Wonderful performance of "Royals" by Lorde. I love that song. Even so, I think it was better when performers were not allowed to use backing tracks during so-called "live" performances.
"Hip hop artists?" Like who? The Grammys are a joke and are certainly not representative of even a fraction of the music that is out there. However, with that said, there are two fairly decent albums up for album of the year.
"Cut Me Some Slack" wins Best Rock Song. Dave Grohl, Paul McCartney. I can't believe I've never heard it before. I just can't stand to listen to the radio anymore.
I always have the show on in the background while I read something or surf the web, just in case they have a live performance like the one we just saw from Pink. I've seen plenty of great stage performances over the years at the Grammies from Pink, Janet Jackson, Paula Abdul, Aerosmith, Lady Gaga, and many others. I have low expectations for the awards for pop, hip hop, and rap, understanding that none of that material is intended to appeal to anybody under the age of 30. Sometimes the awards make sense to me in categories like jazz, blues, and classical, but those are given out in the afternoon session, not on TV. Probably the most worthless Grammy is "Best New Artist". Look at the list of past winners, and it doesn't match up well at all with performers from those years that went on to great success. I think a lot of bands like the Grateful Dead realize that they are performing for a narrow but intensely loyal fan base, and are content to just keep them happy. I don't see a problem there. I've seen the video of it being recorded at Dave's home studio. Not bad at all. That whole jam session was fun.
Kacey Musgraves just performed an interesting country song expressing dilemmas of the Bible Belt and also saying "kiss lots of girls, if that's what you're into". Never heard a lyric like that in a country song. Hmmm. It wasn't bad.
I think the over-hyped Paul McCartney / Ringo Starr performance was a joke, at best. They only allowed Ringo to lay down a basic beat, while Paul's regular drummer was rocking it down right beside of him. No former Beatle should ever be embarrassed that way. Ringo has earned more respect than that.
I thought you would like that. I think the youngest character on the TV show Nashville is based on her. All my life, Willie Nelson has been considered both a current performer and a classic performer. And he sounds exactly the same. One of those things you can always count on, like death and taxes.
