Only "Nonessential Services" are affected. Which begs the question: why are we paying for stuff that isn't essential? I thought the whole purpose of having a federal government was to do essential stuff. The so-called 'shutdown' can last forever as far as I'm concerned.

Is this one of those moments where people cried black and blue about the government and wanted it shut down and now they're crying black and blue that the government has shut down?

  4. Yeah...just wait until you find out what they consider nonessential services....

I still have a few expired MacDonalds awards from school sports contests. Could always fudge the expirey date so you can enjoy a Happy Meal if need be. Lemme know. :)

US military action won't grind to halt over any of this. The NSA will continue to listen to phone calls without a warrant. And I doubt April 15th will be postponed.

Odd coincidence - since 45 imposed those steel tariffs there’s only one manufacturer capable of meeting the demand for steel slats required by the wall - and it’s a good friend of his and Putin’s. Small world

It's all the Democrats fault - Trump said so!

I don't see what's so hard for the Democrats to simply agree to shell out over 5-billion tax-payers dollars for a wall that is going to need maintenance and a salary for the army of personnel which will offer 24-hour surveillance, for a wall which immigrants won't simply dig under or boat around. It's not like the country is in debt of any kind.

And I don't see why Trump gets such a bad rap for this, cause Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton wanted the exact same thing! Okay, okay, they didn't want a 5 billion-dollar+ fucking wall, but they did want boarder security, and that's basically the exact same thing!

The irony of furloughing your Homeland security officers for 'national security' is too much for me.

He is also forcing IRS employees to come back to work (without pay) solely to issue tax refunds so that people won't be mad.

The areas affected by the partial shutdown are, as far as I can determine:

420,000 federal employees from various agencies are working without pay. The NY Times reports 800,000 are working without pay.
380,000 have been furloughed. They will probably never received back payment.

Food stamps (SNAP) will last through January, unless new funds are appropriated they will probably run out in February or March.
Subsidized school lunches are in danger.
    Tax returns will be late.
Many Transportation Security Administration workers (TSA) have begun to call in sick. (Unpaid)
The EPA is shutdown, everyone furloughed.
The Smithsonian, National Gallery of Art, and National Zoo are closed.
Many national parks are closed. Toilets are overflowing, trash is piling up in the ones still open.
The US Department of Agriculture is closed, farmers expecting relief from Trump's trade wars are left high and dry.
NASA is closed as China lands the first explorer ever on the dark side of the moon.
Immigration courts are closed, cases are being postponed, there is already a backlog of 800,000 cases.
E Verify, the government immigration system database is down.
Government scientists are missing several major conferences on technology, space exploration, extreme weather and climate change.
The White House switch board is down.
1,068 members of the staff White House staff have been furloughed, 691 are not being paid. The lowest rungs have been furloughed.
Over 30 million small business are unable to secure government loans.
The Federal Housing Administration mortgage loans are on hold.
Government reimbursement to crime victims is gone.

I just remembered another one...after seeing something about it on the net.

The entire Coast Guard is going without pay....you know the guys that intercept those evil drugs coming into the U.S. by sea (and around a possible 2,000 mile long wall).
That would be 41,000 people not being paid to protect our borders and inland waterways.

But never fear the Coast Guard Support Program is stepping up with a five page tip sheet.

    Here's one tip:
    Here's another:
But the tips were only for the 8,500-person civilian workforce, active Coast Guard service men and women didn't even get any tips at all!

three weeks ago, impeachment still looked like an impossible dream, though perhaps a tiny be less after the mid terms,
but now, as this really ignorant shut down thing grinds on,
the impeachment of donald trump, would be, the one sure way, to end it.

    just a passing thought.

is a crime not a crime if its done openly and in front of everyone?
there are litterally hundreds of oh well technically that's maybe not really a crime.

    oh come on.

emoluments clause, fake charities, fraudulent seminary colleges,
and this icing on the let them eat cake?

you see his posse standing next to him giving his little temper tantrums.
do those faces look like they're proud to be there,
    or more like,
what the hell are we doing here,
and is what we're getting paid, no matter how much, really worth the world seeing us standing here, with this?

they may not have the spine to do anything about it themselves, after all, he's they're sugar daddy,
but they sure look like they'd love a good excuse to abandon ship.

Long term this is why it works.

His base likes the idea that a big inefficient goverment is gone. Things that suffer don't matter like the environment or those lazy Mexicans on food stamps. Sorry to yell you these are very essential services lost for the civilized world.

I see a scenario where we get close to election time and we still feel the effects of this. Of course all he has to do is say "those dems" and it's all whitewashed and forgotten. Like everything else his incompetence can be blamed on those who attempt to check and balance him. If only everyone would just honor and listen to him there would be zero issue.

    Once again "poorly educated" thinking.

So lets compare it to Obama's shutdown of 2013.

United States federal government shutdown of 2013 - Wikipedia

    Domestic effects
    Effect on federal government operations

USA.gov website shutdown on October 15

Federal employees protest the government shutdown at a rally outside of the Capitol
Main article: List of agencies affected by the United States federal government shutdown of 2013
On September 17, 2013, Office of Management and Budget Director, Sylvia M. Burwell, mandated an update for each federal agency's contingency plan that designated excepted agency operations, as required by the Antideficiency Act for a potential funding gap and shutdown. Burwell stated: "There is enough time for Congress to prevent a lapse in appropriations, and the Administration is willing to work with Congress to enact a short-term continuing resolution to fund critical Government operations and allow Congress the time to complete the full year 2014 appropriations. However, prudent management requires that agencies be prepared for the possibility of a lapse."

During the shutdown, most non-exempt government employees were furloughed. That would have put about 800,000 public employees on indefinite unpaid leave starting October 1.The White House estimated that a one-week shutdown could have cost the US economy $10 billion.[128] Key government functions, such as air traffic control, stay active under emergency funding statutes, though other related functions (such as training and support of these services) would be suspended. Some agencies and departments—such as the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and Social Security Administration—are funded by long-term or mandatory appropriations and were also largely unaffected. While veteran and military benefits are funded a year in advance, furloughed civilians had a large impact on the military and their families. Services to families on bases ranging from commissaries to family and survivor counseling were affected.Since the United States Postal Service is self-funded, it was unaffected and continued normal operations. The United States Merchant Marine Academy was closed for operations during the shutdown massively impacting the curriculum and schedule.

On October 5, the House unanimously passed a bill that would provide back pay to all furloughed federal employees after the shutdown is resolved, and Obama stated that he would sign the bill into law. Rep. Elijah Cummings said "Our hard-working public servants should not become collateral damage. This is not their fault and they should not suffer as a result."Those responsible for the shutdown did not have to worry about their pay, however, as congressional salaries are written into permanent law.[132] A bill to revise this passed in the Senate in 2011, but was never voted on by the House of Representatives.

    Internal Revenue Service delays
As a result of the shutdown, the IRS's processing of returns and issuing of refunds were expected to be delayed by one week in January 2014. Taxpayer audits were postponed by the IRS during the shutdown. However, tax returns due on October 15 remained due on that deadline.Due to the 16-day federal government closure, "to allow adequate time to program and test tax processing systems", the IRS 2014 filing season, for accepting and processing 2013 individual tax returns, would start no earlier than January 28, 2014 and no later than February 4, 2014.

    Effects on non-profit organizations
The 2013 ArtPrize in Michigan was affected by the shutdown due to several entries being displayed in and around the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, part of the National Archives, which was affected in the shutdown.

The Fall 2013 Chincoteague Pony Round-up was postponed indefinitely by the ponies' caretakers, the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company. The ponies live on neighboring Assateague Island, inside the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, which was closed during the shutdown. The Fall Round-up typically consists of vet checks, immunizations, and collection/sale of foals born since the annual Pony Penning event, which was held in July.

EarthSpan, which tracks vital details about the diseases and migrations of the peregrine falcon, was unable to conduct its yearly survey due to the shutdown of Assateague in Maryland. This created a huge hole in disease tracking and species recovery data—the first year without data since the organization began tracking in the 1970s.

    Effect on businesses
Defense contractors and some manufacturers the government hired experienced disruptions as the shutdown prevented those companies from delivering goods and receiving payments for work already done.[141] United Technologies announced that if the shutdown was not resolved by October 7, it would furlough 2,000 employees at a military helicopter manufacturing subsidiary, Sikorsky Aircraft. Another 2,000 United Technologies employees would have been furloughed if the shutdown lasted beyond October 14 and an additional 1,000 if the shutdown lasted into November. Another United Technologies subsidiary, Pratt & Whitney, a manufacturer of aircraft engines, was also affected. The Sikorsky and Pratt & Whitney factories require civilian employees from the Defense Contract Management Agencyto approve their products before they can be delivered to the government. Those Defense Department employees were furloughed.[142] Similarly, Lockheed Martin announced plans to furlough 3,000 employees on October 7. Those employees work at government facilities or require government inspectors to complete their jobs. Lockheed said that the number of employees furloughed would increase if the shutdown continued.

Small businesses faced delays in receiving loans from the Small Business Administration. Many of these companies needed to turn to alternative funding sources that charged much higher interest rates. One alternative source of credit, merchant cash advances, charge interest rates of between 40% and 100%.

Since U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the agency which regulates trade and inspects cargoes, had not shut down, imports and exports continued. However, many products require approval from other agencies before they can be brought into or out of the country. With many of these regulators furloughed, importers and exporters experienced delays. For instance, furloughs at the Environmental Protection Agency resulted in a halt to all imports of pesticides to the United States. Imports of lumber and steel were also delayed as were exports of semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Airbus was unable to deliver new airplanes to the airlines JetBlue and US Airways because Federal Aviation Administration personnel who certify airplanes were furloughed.

    Effect on Native Americans
Although the Bureau of Indian Affairs continued to run programs during the shutdown that were deemed essential, including firefighting and police services, it stopped financing tribal governments as well as many programs, grants, and services that provide necessary support for often-impoverished reservations. The cuts shut down programs that provide income, medical care, food, transportation, domestic violence protection, and foster care to communities, resulting in a sense of fear among many people who rely on these services. Some tribes were able to continue funding programs temporarily themselves, but others had to suspend programs immediately. For example, the Crow Tribe of Montana furloughed 364 employees, more than a third of its workforce, and suspended programs providing health care, bus services and improvements to irrigation. The Yurok tribe of Northern California, which relies almost exclusively on federal funds, furloughed 60 out of its 310 employees, closed its child care center, and cut off emergency financial assistance to the poor and elderly. The Yurok Indian Reservation had an unemployment rate exceeding 80% before the shutdown. In Minnesota, the Red Lake Band of Chippewa were supposed to receive $1 million from the Bureau of Indian Affairs to help operate their government, but were not given access to the money before the shutdown and were forced to halt all non-emergency medical procedures. The White Buffalo Calf Woman Society,a domestic violence shelter that serves the Rosebud Indian Reservation and surrounding communities in South Dakota, lost 90% of its funding due to the shutdown and was forced to turn victims away.

But you guys loved Obama so it will somehow be different now.

And he was much smarter than Trump....so.....its all good.

We made it through that stupidity, we will make it through this one too.
