If a vote is forced, he can't get 218 votes either. The hardcore Tea Party members aren't going to vote for any speaker (old or new) who doesn't promise to shut down the government if they don't get 100% of what they want.

What we essentially have now is a three party system, with rules set up for two parties. We may end up seeing moderate Republicans offer a power sharing deal to the Democrats; a coalition type arrangement seen all over the world for decades, but never in America before.

The cons can't find a sacrificial lamb to be speaker, because none of the "career" politicians want to lose their gravy job like Boehner. And also they don't want to make a teabagger the speaker, because they know it will destroy the GOP. The cons want to destroy the government, but none of them want to go down in history as the traitor to the country when it fails. That's the chickenhawk party for you.

Paul Ryan just announced that he's willing to take the speaker job, so he will inherit the budget crisis, if the vote goes as expected.

John Boehner, in the last major political deal of his career, seems to have resolved all major budget issues for the rest of this year, all of next year, and into 2017. This is quite a gift to American taxpayers who have become very tired of wondering whether and when the goverment is going to be open or closed, and to Paul Ryan who will officially get elected Speaker tomorrow. Ryan will benefit from this deal without having to piss anybody off to get it done.
