How about this. If we all kept our damn mouths shut from time to time, there would be less labels.

well, I don't want to sound rude, but... to me, Hippy is precisilly the contrary of Gothic. Hippie is a person who loves life. Gothic is a person who is ready to die at any moment. Hippie is a person who loves the sun, nature, plants, the country... goth... you know, has a different opinion about people... daylight means nothing to him,

But, you know, be whatever you want. And, like someone has said before, do you need both names to feel happy?

if one is clinically depressed, can they not be considered a hippy?

Also, readiness for death cannot conflict with love of life, for when one is not ready for it, one fears it.

being goth doesnt mean you are all depressed and hate people. Goths are often the happiest people in the world.

I heard precisily the contrary. They sometimes feel sad and depressed and don't even know why. Unless you like being depressed, is that being happy?

«if one is clinically depressed, can they not be considered a hippy?»

(I guess i'm spamming... sorry, but can't do it any onther way :S)

Well, man, mybe I'm totally wrong, but may depressions happen to all the people? You know, there are people with less self-esteem; isn't it easier for them to get depressed? Once again, maybe I'm just saying bulshit, but... as for me, I got near of having several depressions, but I allways cheered me up, I never let myself go down, with a little help from my mom.

In my idea of a hippie, he doesn't let himself go down; he loves his life, just because a bad thing happen to him, doesn't mean he gets all depressed.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. Cheers.

I am frustrated and angered by the apparent ignorance of my dear friends in this forum, so I apologise that this is a long post, but please take the time to read it.

I was born depressed, i always will be depressed. It is not the same thing as sadness. Clinical depression is often based in brain chemistry. (as i suppose mine is) I can't just shrug it off. So am I not a hippy? Last i checked one was not required to be constantly happy to be a hippy.

Goths don't necessarily hide from the problems in the world. Hippies dont necesarily deal with them. When one goes off to live on a commune, they aren't exactly dealing with the problems in the world. I dress in mostly black, because black is the color i associate with. If one is fully aware of the problems in the world, it is very easy to feel down, even pessimistic. As i think i said earlier in the thread, I am an idealist pessimist. Expect the worst, hope (and work) for the best.

I acknowledge that people suck, but i don't think they have to. There are select people who redeem the rest of the species. Some of these people are "hippies", some are "goth" some are "punk", "raver" or "preppy".

These labels mean NOTHING about a person. They are just social groups, if even that. Do you agree about everything with all of your friends? If you do, I'd bet your conversations aren't very lively.

I think death is equally beautiful as life. Dark as beautiful as light.
I just happen to be one who embraces and is embraced by the darkness.
Does that mean I can not be a Hippy?

I am a free spirit, i attend (and help orgainize) actions of civil disobedience, i listen to all kinds of music. I dislike authority and i love "sticking it to the man".

Do not tell me what I can and cannot be. That is only for me to decide.

sorry, but I am still talking...
Goths are often very sad/angry/frustrated/depressed when separated from their own. I am very happy among my own people... being Goths, Hippies, whatever.
