What a load of bullshit. I'm so sorry to hear that. That is a joke.

Like that meme I see sometimes. If you leave your dog in a hot car then I'll give you a free broken window. This is very relatable.

Trials are a real mess and they drag on forever. Wishing him the best.

Some people in the comments section under the article say he should have just called animal control instead of rescuing the dog. I guess if he had a phone on him that would have been the better option in hindsight. But if not, and he had gone to get his phone and someone saw him leave the dog without doing anything he could have been charged with reckless indifference before he had a chance to make the call to prove otherwise.

Here in the first world, we're all "recklessly" indifferent to the rest of the world. The best way to keep one's head above water, is to keep it buried in the sand. Always look away, and if you accidently glance at a dangerous situation, quickly walk away saying, "I didn't see nothing."

Seriously, notice how many old people are out there, and don't think they lasted that long without living by the motto, "I saw nootthhiinngg!!"

If animal control there is like animal control everywhere else I've lived--they're useless and don't show up quickly or don't show up at all. Hope this works out for him---I would have done the same.

This happens a lot. I have got into trouble a few times for saving animals from neglectful owners.

I got threatened with trespassing charges once for a similar situation..my neighbor's dog was left outside on a chain with no food and water for a week so I provided food and water for a week, then I took the dog. Luckily nothing ever came of it, my neighbor realized the error of her ways and actually finally let me keep the dog.

situations like that are a real catch 22 for the animal lover. You can rescue the animal.amd face criminal charges or you can call animal control and the animal probably ends up euthanized.

hopefully the judge will be a fellow animal lover. Sending your friend good vibes!

pets are considered property in most if not all jurisdictions

gotta go to the source and change that

moral right is not always legal right

hopefully the guy gets a decent common law type judge instead of a hardliner

Your friend did the right thing (IMO). But it seems like doing the right thing is not something society (as a whole) has much respect for. I also have seen animals being abused/neglected, and have always felt torn about what to do about it? Bottom line is that it's a sad day when somebody is being punished for caring enough to actually do something. I'll be sending out many good thoughts and positive vibes to your friend...

No witnesses showed up for prosecution. Judge gave continuance until late July.

Is this guy's lawyer any good?

He has a sixth ammendment right to a speedy trial. If the witnesses for the prosecution just didn't give enough of a fuck to show up, the case should be dismissed.

    He does.

The defense had previously been granted a continuance so the judge thought it fair to give the prosecution one as well.

Psh, it's hard to believe anyone in these kind of stories. There are people who leave dogs chained up outside for extended amounts of time, with no food or water. And there are people who steal dogs to do abusive things with them, or people who are such busy-beings that they think they're the only saintly caregivers of children and animals. However, you said you know the person who is standing on trial, so I'm more likely to believe the person who recused the dog than the abuser that left the dog chained up outside with no food or water. All in all, I do hope for the best. But, if this was just a story I was reading I really would just care about the dog. I'm not one of those people who cares more about animals than humans. I'm not going to go give this speech about how I better understand animals or they better understand me, over humans. It's nothing like that, Humans and animals are equally important to me and as far as understanding, I don't understand neither, and I'm sure they don't understand me. So, it's nothing like that. It's just the one character in this story that can't defend itself is the dog, and I worry.

The only reason to worry about the dog in this story is because the crackhead got her guard dog back.

Steve and his wife have taken care of over 100 stray animals in that neighborhood in the last 5 years.
