I rarely go to the bar alone (and then only if i am sure to meet someone I know there :p). I am just not used to it and don't think I'd have a great time. But often when I am with friends I wonder off for awhile and get to talk with other people in no time. Would not try soon to go out solely on my own for some reason. I do know other people who do and have fun :p

Buggs Bunny did it best, but the human version isn't bad either. ;)

That overture is probably the best thing Rossini ever wrote.

Are you into opera, Karen? I would never have guessed!

I like a lot of different kinds of music. :) I have a huge CD collection.

One of my favorite operas is the sequel to "The Barber of Seville", Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro". It's funny, clever, and surprisingly risqué, for the time in history when it was written.

Well, I have a huge music collection too. But although extensive and very diverse, opera is not really presented in it.

I prefer to see opera performed live. I don't listen to it on CD, where you can't see the costumes or read the English subtitles. I have CD's of Rossini overtures and Wagner overtures.

The idea of live performance always attracts me but with musicals and opera there is certainly more hesistation in reality. This especially counts for musicals though! (edit: most likely only because they are more prevalent here :p)

There's nothing more fun than finding a bar with a really good live band playing dance music, and an uncrowded dance floor! There are only a few places in the American South with a reputation for offering a lot of those opportunities: New Orleans, Memphis, Nashville, Austin, and Miami. Atlanta isn't too bad. The Miami clubs play mostly Latino music. In other cities, you mostly find clubs with DJ's only.

    Who's playing?

    Edit:

    Iration? Never heard of them.

On a side note, downtown Rochester is such a shithole. I mean, the entire Greater Rochester area sucks, but driving down Main Street is like driving through a dead city. It's really quite surreal. Such a sad, depressed, shitty city. I cannot believe I am still here after all this time.

Ever been to World Wide News? I haven't been there in years, but used to go there all the time. Lots of freaky looking people and bums there. It's as real as Rochester gets, though.

I like the one called "What's Opera, Doc"?
    Set to Wagner music. Classic!

yeah, it's iration. i'm pretty sure i'm gonna go, just gotta find someone to go with. my wife doesn't wanna.

the bars and stuff aren't really in downtown though (most of them). they are on monroe...alexander (i guess that's pretty much downtown....but if it is, it's not really dead. ever been to buffalo? way worse)

i really don't have a frame of reference, because i have only lived in like two different areas - a tiny tiny town in WNY, and rochester. but i like living here. i think it's pretty nice, regardless of the state of downtown, which i don't often go to. when i do though, it's not that bad. there is at least one restaurant i like going to downtown.

never heard of world wide news. what you mean by "real?"

the bug jar is alright, i only go when there is a band i know playing. and my friends like to go to places like acme, prepps...maybe a couple others on monroe. they are alright, but like we've said, i'd rather have a couple friends to my house and just drink there. i finished my bottle of fireball whiskey last night, i really like the distinct type of buzz it gives me.

The thing I said about downtown just popped into my head. I know most of the bars aren't there. It was just a random thought that popped into my head since Water Street is downtown. I actually remember my first concert at Water Street back in '95. It was the band Rancid. I had won free tickets via a late night cable access show that aired at the time.

My favorite bars in Rochester are the Old Toad on Alexander and Monty's Krown on Monroe. I haven't been to either in years, though. There's also that one on South Ave I forgot the name of. Lots of hipsters go there, but that's not really my scene anymore.

I would take you up on the Water Street offer if it wasn't for the license ordeal, which should be (hopefully) resolved by the later half of next month.

PS is a pretty chill guy. Somewhat reserved (as am I), but probably the most academically-inclined stoner I will ever meet.

monty's krown is pretty cool. i've been there once, maybe twice to see a friend of mine's band play. old toad has a good beer selection, but it's not cheap, and that place is a little hoity toity for me. maybe it's the English theme...too proper for me. where i come from, the bars smell like piss and you can spit on the floor.

the south ave one - maybe you mean Lux? never been there, sounds like a neat place though. they have grill your own meat night, PB&J night, a special called a Pabst smear...

yeah i like tribal seeds more than iration. i was pumped when i found that out yesterday. and they are playing on a saturday, so it'll be a lot more rad than a sunday concert

    hahaa, thanks for the compliment.

Yeah, Lux Lounge -- that's it!

I agree with you about the Old Toad being, as you put it, "hoity toity." But I am not really into noisy, crowded bars, either. I like it simply for the beer. Their food is lousy, though. I couldn't care less about the atmosphere or the people working there. Yeah, it is very expensive, hence the reason I haven't been there in so long.

yeah, food kinda sucks there. but i don't think english people are well known for good cooking.

so if you guys are ever "going out" in rochester, ny....just ask me or pressed rat where not to go :)
