Is there any reason, pertaining to this reality, that warrants their position? I understand the whole it makes God mad bullshit... but maybe something about how gay people are actually negatively affecting society?

If you want to fuck with people's lives you best have a good reason. The problem is that people base their decisions on something that isn't REAL in any practical sense.
So when I see stem-cells and the shit possible with it in action, I see nothing but good, for reasons I could go into. But the religious posit a claim that is completely fucking arbitrary, without the concept of God, which is unverifiable.
Congressman should be able to hold any belief they wish. But as a public official they should explain themselves in rational terms. References of God and Faith placate to our feeble emotions. It is not fair, it is not wise, its not progressive.

First off, the "protestants" are not a church. Protestants are all of those denominations that grew out of the Lutheran reformation.

Anyhow here are some denominations that do not believe that Gays go to Hell.
Episcopalians (sp?)
Methodists
Quakers
Jehova's Witnesses
Mormons (believe that Gays probably won't go to hell but might)
Seventh Day Adventists
Old School Unitarians and Universalists (most of these are in Central and Eastern Europe)
