I am not sure if any of you have been following the story of the Russian icebreaker trapped in the Antarctic sea. They were transporting a scientific team to study the affects of global warming. Not to fear as they then called in an icebreaker from China, who also ended up stuck in the ice. Now they have an American icebreaker, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star on the way to rescue the other two. Not to worry as the scientific team has been rescued by helicopter from the Russian ship. Why do I have a feeling momma nature won this round?
Global warming sure wins. I got bitten by mosquitos. In fucking januari. That's bizarre, I don't think that ever happened before over here in the Netherlands.
Usetobehoney, they mainly use the ice breaker ships to cut through the ice to keep shipping lanes open, to transport people or supplies through icy water and also rescue other ships that somehow get trapped in ice. I guess they decided that it was safer or faster to try to transport the research team by icebreaker boat through the icy water rather than travel over the ice. I'm not sure - I haven't read the details.
It was all over the news for a couple weeks here. After they got the scientists off the ship I have not heard anything. The crew is still on the ship that got stuck in the ice. Not sure I would want to be part of the crew. When we were going through our deep freeze the last few weeks they kept saying that it was colder here than in Antarctica. That kinda gave me a chuckle.
Russia. America. China. Working together to save human life. The cold war is truly over (COLD war - get it? :blush5: ) . Humanity won!
If Antarctica would warm up slowly eventually we can go there without icebreakers So humans win in the long run!
In that case Antarctica will be coming to US (especially to YOU in "down under"). Win - win situation?
Interesting that David Cameron said in Parliament yesterday that the extreme weather we've been experiencing here in the UK is linked to global warming. Trouble is, many in his party are climate change deniers. What green policies they do have are pretty inadequate. Some have even suggested that Britain could benefit from climate change. I won't even try to comment on just how cynical and misguided that view is. I think that since we are a part of nature, something produced by nature, if we get wiped out nature looses too.
It's not unusual some kind of animal gets wiped out through natural causes. Does this mean nature wins or looses? How would that differ if the animal in case would be the human species
Since our brains are more complex it might take longer to replace us. But if we were wiped out, other intelligent beings might evolve in the remote future. Can't see any other real difference between us and the dodo.
