What are the sunrises and sunsets like there?

 

Sunrise is the best time of day. It is mercifully cool. The whole process takes about 3 hours. First, the whole world is drained of color. The light is very subtle, and it feels like we're on the moon. Then, gradually-- very gradually, the contrasts deepen. There are rose colored clouds at the horizon, and the world seems as ancient as it really is. It's easy to imagine ancient religious men walking here, Muhammad, Jesus Christ. Tiny brown and grey birds dart around, singing. Then the sun springs over the horizon. Colors begin to look normal in the long rays. The clouds move higher, become fainter.
It becomes noticeably warmer.
Eventually, the light becomes overwhelming. The sky is left a huge, pitiless, colorless void. There is blue at the horizon, but overhead is a majesty so terrible that no one dares not avert their eyes. Colors lose their power again, and everything becomes blanched, white hot.

I often work through sunset, and don't pay it much attention. I do know that all the trees and birds and lizards seem to relax, to become more lively and more calm at the same time.
