He died a hero in 1977. Powers became a helicopter pilot for NBC in Los Angeles. While trying to make an emergency landing in small clearing in a densely populated area, he nose-dived his helicopter into the ground when he realized there were kids playing in the clearing. He sacrificed his own life to save theirs.
