ABSOLUTELY!!!! Those busses should have been running on Saturday or sooner, we knew the storm was coming. "Wasn't cost effective." those poor people were told. If you have no money and no car, how are you supposed to "evacuate" yourself?

Also, those levees have been in trouble for decades, again it wasn't "cost effective" to repair them. People have been saying for years, if those levees break, thousands will die. It just wasn't a priority of our pResident.

Sad and sadder. It is even sadder than so many in the rest of the world take Glee in our sorrows. I've never taken Glee at the misfortune of anyone. It is disheartening to see so much of it here. :(

Do you not accept that peope had a unwillingness to leave.. many people for there own reasons , just chose to stay. I have heard far too many people that alter in hindsight ' i aint leavin' with 'i was left behind' now the scale of the diaster is here...
Nobody wants to be deemed 'silly' for not heading the warnings .. Nobody wishes to take away from the fact that it was a chaotic situation.. and things could have gone better.. any reasonable perspective from many people so far ?? NO.

Maggie, PLEASE RETURN TO THE PARENTAL FORUM. I've been here for over 5 years, and you've been on this forum for quite a short period of time. Please don't threaten me again. Thanks.

Oh my God you make me so mad.

The REST OF THE WORLD??? Do you actually pretend to understand what "the rest of the world" is feeling? AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've seen blogs from people in Europe, Asia, and yes, the Middle East expressing condolences and sorrow for the horrific tragedy that befalled New Orleans. If you'd like links, I'll be happy to provide them.

actually, maggie, the mayor is guilty of replying far too slowly to the call for evacuation. levees aside, the mayor's own evacuation code book called for the deployment of city vehicles and it wasn't done. i'm hardly going to call the black mayor of new orleans racist for not getting this done, nor am i going to accuse him of hating or even not caring at all for his own constituents. something else went wrong.

i have to agree with this. after sitting through two fairly minor hurricanes because my dad liked braving the storms, i know that a lotta people like to show what big balls they have and party right through the rain.

yep. there's also plenty of clear hospital beds just COVERED in red tape and the legal requirement for PERMISSION. fascinating what happens in such a litigious country.

I think that all of those Beltway politicians should have phoned thier limosines and sent all of them down to New Orleans to rescue the people.

And this being The Big Easy, the limo's should have a full stocked bar service.
    We go in style here.

    Bless y'all

its not up to the gov to rescue anyone ....however if there were no laws or cops ...a lot of people , roped off from the 'disaster ' , would have helped ....hell i would even have maby gone and tried to do something ....but the idea of being detained and rectaly scearched by jackboot nazis puts a stop to thoughts like that .in short fuck the ritch and their bought dogs , the poliece .

    clear hospital beds???

they had to move people to higher floors in hospitals because the lower floors were getting looted so badly it was no longer safe, i'm SUREEEE that it was just red tape which was closing the beds...

I've been here for three years. I am a SuperMod. My responsibility extends to the entire board, I would think you would know this if you were here so long.

This is your last warning. I'll damn well warn you for personal attacks, per the guidlines.

don't get your panties in a wad, seriously. if you relax and stop getting so defensive, you might actually get the gist of what i'm saying. i'm not talking about hospital beds within the flood zone, but hospitals withOUT the zone, with methods of retrieving the ill, having plenty of free space for the wounded and ill, but red tape DECLARES that they MUST have permission to collect these people. therefore the ill and woulded languish in less than healthy circumstances.

ouch, getting a little touchy, aren't we?

Again, please stop with the authoritarian tone. Thank you and God Bless you. May you learn to see with reason and responsibility. And that's the last I'll say to you, as we share an ideology conflict that seemingly cannot be resolved. No reply from you will be necessary, as we begin right at this instant to ignore one another. Good Day.

    I SAID GOOD DAY!! ;)

Send in help that gets shot at? Sure, why not. We sent in troops to get shot at in Iraq to "liberate" people of another nation. Why can't we do that in our own country to save lives of AMERICANS? We were able to drop food by helicopters in Iraq and even Vietnam. Why didn't this happen in our own country?

Of course we can blame the government for the race issue as well. If this was a city that was mostly white or had a larger percentage of white people such as New York City do you think the response would have been this poor? Fuck no. Or perhaps Washington D.C.? Don't be so naive.

And I am sure Bush cares with all of his heart, you know he only stayed on vacation for 2 more days after it hit. Got to give him credit, I mean the biggest natural disaster in American history. You don't think the president would take action right away right? Nahh. Why should he? It is only poor black americans dying.

Every year and as strong as Katrina? I don't know about that. The largest Typhoon recorded in the Pacific that struck Philippines, Taiwan, and Southern China was Typhoon Tip in 1979 with winds gusting up to 190 mph. Now Katrina's winds were 160 mph. Category 5 Hurricanes or typhoons don't hit every year I am sorry. They are rare occurances.

Now the military could have went in like they did in Iraq. They didn't just bomb the hell out of Iraq, they went into Baghdad. There was plenty of ground combat. Why couldn't the military and National Gaurd and whatever else necessary gone in and nuetralized looters and gunman and rescued people? That brings us to your next question.

Hmmm, why couldn't they land choppers at the convention center and rescue people that were abandoned for days? They could have dropped troops in that area also. Also I don't know what era you think our military technology is in but I assure you it is past the point where they developed plenty of efficiant amphibious vehicles and boats. Remember D-Day and the Higgins Boats that worked well? You know I think we have come along way since then even with better technology and vehicles.

Well here I dont know what you are trying to say cause you are kind of contradicting yourself. You said that they can do all that in one month half way across the world? Well then why can't we do that not half way across the world but in our own home?

Now we'll end with one final note. The government is now containing the situation by use of many ways that I have mentioned. They are rescuing more and more people now. But if they could do that now, why couldn't they do it a week ago? Why is the situation different now? Where did the dreaded looters and gunman that you exaggerated go? Why wasn't anything done quicker? Why was our president on vacation instead of attending to a state of emergency in his own country? Why weren't there more preperations taken before the storm hit. They knew a catagory 5 Hurricane was coming, what did they think it would just blow a few trees over? Do they not know what a category 5 Hurricane can do to an area already below sea water? They surely can't be that stupid. The preperation and response by the state and federal government was terrible and if it wasn't why is it going under investigation by the Senate? Also for whoever said it was peoples unwillingness to leave. Let me tell you that MANY people simply couldn't. New Orleans is ranked up there among U.S. cities in poverty. Maybe you have a comfortable income and many of us in these forums do and are able to get some sort of evacuation if need be. But in a poor area such as New Orleans or in the deep south, how could they have left? Especially on such short notice. Drive in cars that many don't have. Especially with outragous gas prices. The Mayor and Governor failed big here, where was the attempt to evacuate the poor by use of buses? It didn't happen. The fact is once again the preperation wasn't there and the response was too late.

He realized (Bush, he's slow) that the whole world was watching, and that his job was on the line. If it could have been kept out of the media, those poor people would still be on their rooves and in that horrible convention center and Super Dome, in their own excrement, and there would be NO help for them, ever.
