A couple of years ago, around Christmas time, I decided to donate to Greenpeace. I don't have a lot of money, so I only donated 20 bucks. I thought, "Hey, it's something", and went about my way. For the next TWO YEARS these people have hounded me through the mail. They send me bumper stickers, personalized return address labels, blank greeting cards, and several "final notice" membership renewal requests. They've spent more money trying to get me to donate again than I ever gave them in the first place! What the hell is wrong with this organization??
They spend that money to insinuate their particular "brand" into public consciousness, as a loss leader, just like any other advertiser trying to gain market traction. It's up to you to decide if you think them to be a worthy cause or not, depending on how you perceive their aggressive methods.
Yeah, that is what I see with a lot of the feeding Africa countries foundations too. I've heard as little as 30c might get to them out of the dollar you put in. I donate some amounts to eye charity and foundations for eye care and eye health. I've never gotten a letter or anything from them and it's just whenever I am at my eye specialist clinic, so no addresses or anythjng given. Just donate.
i had the same thing happen with a small donation to MADD (mothers against drunk driving)....i swear they must have spent $50 in postages and printing bugging me for more money for years and years and id only donated like $5
According to my research I didn't actually do any research, just googled their administrative costs and saw on the google search results they rate 3 out of 4 by charity navigator That lost point is probably because of this. Damn you greenpeace
This happened to me when I donated blood. I donated once, and it ended with me in the emergency room, so now I don't donate anymore. But damn, the Blood Center called me biweekly, emailed me, and send me letters for years afterwards trying to talk me out of more of my bodily fluids.
I'm sure that Greenpeace did some good and productive with your money... you know like... hanging a banner off a bridge or chaining themselves to a tree.
Was wondering lately, if Greenpeace was still going. You answered my question. I don't mind donating, but hate the pestering. If only I could afford to donate enough it would be worthwhile to deduct from my taxes...
I donated to the Red Cross and the (commonwealth?) of Puerto Rico along with a charity raising money for the earthquake victims in Mexico last week. It wasn't much. Around $30 for each but I did a few at $30 for Red Cross since they were doing disaster relief for several hurricanes as well as the wildfires here in California. They haven't bothered me about it yet, but not much time has gone by yet. We'll see what happens. I won't be surprised if and when I get a lot of "ask" letters wanting more.
Well I've just been given some financial good news, the African lad I was sponsoring has been eaten by a lion.
I keep trying to donate blood but they always turn me away. One time my pulse was too high, and another time the girl felt around for a while before telling me my veins were too small. At first, I read that as "hanging themselves from a tree."
they're not the only ones who do. i sign every liberal petition i can, without having to give my absolute location to the nearest fraction of an inch. occasionally even then. but for damd near every one i do, i find myself on yet another of act blue's mailing lists. (i don't know anything about the illogical insanity that calls itself conservative, but i would be very much surprised it they didn't do the same kind of crap) its not pesonalities or ideological excuses i'm interested in. the kind of world we all have to live in is. i'm not a brave masochist to seek abuse by exercising my right to assemble in public, and i don't have tons of money to throw at everything, that i'm not convinced throwing money at does that much good for anyway, but i am, as much or more then anything, concerned about the kind of world we all have to live in, if only because, by dam, i do have to live in it too.
i had to attend a philanthropy seminar a few weeks ago where the speaker went on and on about how great some charity was because after she donated they started texting and emailing her every week, and how every charity should do that, because it makes the donor feel appreciated. i made a mental note never to donate to that charity, since i hate being harassed.
